A great event was our football match against Texas A&M—the first match of the academic year. Though we lost 3-0, our team played a great game and made us all very proud. Our talented goal keeper Mohamed Hajaig bravely defended his goal, also Hicham, Saadi, Mohammed Al-Ibrahim, … Continued on page 5 A Word from the Editorial Board Inside this issue: MEMORABLE MOMENTS 2 ISLAM IN 3 FOCUS FIRST 4 EXPERIENCE AT CMU HOTTEST CELEBRETIES 6 ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY 7 The term passed really fast… All students were busy studying, working on projects, starting clubs, and participating in events. We believe it was a productive term for everyone. All Around went through a lot of changes and improvements as well. We are glad to say that we now have an established, solid ground from which we achieve the best we can. Like always, there are changes in All Around this time around too. The most important of which is the re-organization of the Board. Sadly, our current Editor-In-Chief, Noor AlAthirah, will be leaving us in the Spring, and our Lead Writer, Christina Shin will be leaving us entirely. There are other members who were repositioned. The new organization of All Around for the Spring is as follows; Yasmine AbdelRahman: Acting Editor-In-Chief Mona Maher: Editor - Editing Nora AlAnsari: Editor - Collection Basheera Banu: Editor-In-Large Dana Hadan: Lead Writer Ramsey Ramadan: News Writer Noor AlJassim: Business Manager Jinanne Tabra: Designer Yasser Khan: Web Personnel Noor AlMaadeed & Marium Chandna: Staff Writers Kristin Gilmore: Advisor So now you know who to reach out to when you have an enquiry or a suggestion! Finally, we wish you all Good Luck on your finals… Enjoy your break! 2 All Around, Issue 4, Vol. 2 Fun Night Last issue I wrote about how we had started planning for Fun Night and how everyone at Student Majlis was really excited about it. I am now giving you an inside look about the outcome of that night. We started planning for this night around three or even four weeks before it started; during every student majlis meeting we used to try to come up with as many games and fun things to do. We changed our plans many times, all because we were trying to ensure the best outcome. However, the one issue we kept on arguing about was the timing, and the problem is no matter what we agree on, someone comes up and says that some other event is happening at that time or people would not come back to the university on a Wednesday. I would also like to mention that we were glad that we had some Cornell, George Town and Texas students with us for a part of the evening; I hope you all had as much FUN as we did. In the end we chose the time, printed out the flyers, sent the emails and then suddenly Follow Up someone tells us that on December 1st there is an Amery concert in the City Center and that half our students are going there! We were all devastated but confident that the students wouldn’t fail us and that they would come to Fun Night instead. Perhaps we were simply confident that no one would pay 200 QR to go to a concert in the City Center. The Fun Night started and everybody was having fun, whether in the water fights, the eating competition, the three legged races, the tug of war, or any of the other games that were prepared by the representatives from the freshman and sophomore classes. GREAT JOB EVERYONE! To be honest, all Student Majlis members worked very hard to make Fun Night the success that is was, and I am extremely proud to be part of that team. I am still going to get my revenge from from those who sprayed me with water! Yes, Fahad and Fahad, you know I’m going to get you! All Around, Issue 4, Vol.2 Islam in focus JESUS Most people know that Muslims believe in Jesus (peace be upon him) as a prophet.... Have you ever wandered WHAT exactly Muslims believe? What do Muslims believe about Jesus? Muslims respect and revere Jesus (PBUH) , and await his second coming. They consider him one of the greatest messengers of God’s to mankind. A Muslim never refers to him simply as `Jesus', but always adds the phrase "peace be upon him." "I have come to you with a sign from your Lord: I make for you out of the clay, as it were, the figure of a bird, and breathe into it and it becomes a bird by Allaah’s leave. And I heal the blind and the lepers, and I raise the dead by Allaah’s leave." [Quran 3:49] The Qur’an confirms his virgin birth (a chapter of the Qur’an is entitled `Mary') in her name, and Mary is considered the purest woman in all creation. The Qur’an describes the creation of Jesus as follows (interpretation of the meaning) : God's other gifts to him included speaking soon after birth in defense of his mother's piety, healing the blind and the sick, reviving the dead and most importantly, the message he was carrying. These miracles were granted to him by God to establish him as a prophet. "Behold! the Angel said, `God has chosen you, and purified you, and chosen you above the women of all nations. O Mary, God gives you glad tidings of a word from Him, whose name shall be the Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, honored in this world and the Hereafter, and one that shall speak to the people from his cradle and in maturity, and shall be of the righteous.' She said: `O my Lord! How shall I have a son when no man has touched me?' He said: `Even so; God creates what He wills. When He decrees a thing, He but says to it, "Be!" and it is." [Quran 3:42-7] According to the Qur’an, he was not crucified, but only appeared so; instead, Allah raised him unto Heaven (Qur’an, Chapter Maryam). Jesus (PBUH) was born miraculously through the same power which had brought Adam (PBUH) into being without a father: "Truly, the likeness of Jesus unto Allaah is as the likeness of Adam. He created him of dust, and then said to him, `Be!' and he was." [ Quran 3:59 ] During his prophetic mission, Jesus (PBUH) was granted and performed many miracles. The Qur’aan tells us that he said : To sum up, neither Muhammad (PBUH), nor Jesus (PBUH), came to change the basic doctrine of the belief in one God, brought by earlier prophets, but to confirm and renew it. In the Qur’an Jesus (PBUH), is reported as saying that he came: "To attest the law which was before me. And to make lawful to you part of what was forbidden you; I have come to you with a sign form your Lord, so fear God and obey me." [Quran 3:50] 1 Interpretation of the meaning); taken from a translation of Qur'an; no translation of the Qur’an can truly be called Qur’an, as some of the meanings may be different due to translation. Noor Al-Maadeed Staff Writer 3 4 All Around, Issue 4, Vol. 2 First Term Experience at CMU-Q Pink day As we are nearing the end of our first semester of the academic year 20052006, I can hardly believe that it's been three months since I became a freshman at CMU-Q. Time has indeed borne wings and taken flight! My first term experience has been both challenging and wonderful. Academically, I feel the courses not only demand a lot of hard work to obtain good grades but also require constant effort to maintain above average performance. Therefore, many of my days have passed with daily assignments and quizzes leaving me panting for breath and trying to force my eyes from closing at night. I am also aware that many more are yet to come as my sophomores constantly warn me. However, there is another aspect of CMU-Q that has kept me revitalized and my head from crashing under the work load and that is the activities provided for us at CMU-Q. Decorating dustbins, judging door decorations by faculty and staff, the trivia game, the talent show and countless other fun filled events have served as outlets to relieve stress, thus refreshing and relaxing us. Traditional Dress Day I consider myself lucky to be in a place where competitive education is imparted in the friendliest of environments. But to conclude my article here would be to leave it. I would thus like to add that it's because of each one of us at CMU-Q, faculty and staff, the student affairs and all my fellow students, that it is a pleasure to come into the university each day and spend every term like this first one. My time spent here makes me quote what Benjamin Franklin has said "one today is worth two tomorrows", and this is more so when you are at CMU-Q! We were honored by the attendance of Bill Elliot, Dean Bob Kail and many staff and faculty who came to support our team. A remarkable attendance was also displayed from our flamboyant cheerleaders who did a great job motivating our team! Everyone in the audience agreed that all our team needs is simply more practice and we will be able to defeat any other team! Texas A&M is known for its strong team; they practice twice a week, with a coach and have some players in Qatar’s national team as well. A painful but perhaps a comforting fact: they have beaten all of Education City’s teams as well! Great job guys, All Around looks forward to our next match! Yasmine Abdelrahman Editor-in-Large All Around, Issue 4, Vol.2 It Ain’t What You Do, It’s What It Does To You I have not bummed across America with only a dollar to spare, one pair of busted Levi’s and a bowie knife. I have lived with thieves in Manchester. I have not padded through the Taj Mahal, barefoot, listening to the space between each footfall, picking up and putting down its print against the marble floor. But I skimmed flat stones across Black Moss on a day so still I could hear each set of ripples as they crossed. I felt each stone’s inertia spend itself against the water; then sink. I have not toyed with a parachute cord while perched on the lip of a light aircraft; but I held the wobbly head of a boy at the day centre, and stroked his fat hands. 6 Hottest Celebrity Gossip By Amun Bashir, Editor-Theme Eminem Obsessed Fan Murders for Pleasure A British court has found Eminem copy-cat Christopher Duncan, 26, guilty of murdering a female acquaintance Jagdip Najran. Duncan’s intentions were obviously to impersonate Eminem’s actions in the music video of the hit single “Stan”, in which he rammed Najran into a suitcase until she bled to death. Duncan had met Najran in a karaoke bar where he impressed her with his rapping capabilities and took her home for a night of romance. Duncan spent thousands of dollars covering himself in tattoos resembling those of Eminem and was offensively aggressive, similar to the image Eminem portrays. Duncan was set to go on trial on December 5th, 2005.
