MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL THE SEASON OF EASTER PRAYER Lord of life We pray for all who bring your word of life As a light to those in darkness For those who bring your word of peace To those enslaved by fear For those who bring your word of love To those in need of comfort Catholic Education Week this year takes place May 4 – 8th. Catholic schools are Catholic communities. Catholic schools are faith communities. We, as teachers, students, administration, support staff and parents, walk and grow together in the faith which we received at our Baptism. And it is the ‘together’ that we grow. Our growth is primarily a relationship with God, who at our Baptism, called us by name. But the response of each of us to that growth is both personal and communal. We grow in our faith in the nurturing atmosphere of our Catholic community be that of our local parish, our home, or our incredible St. Andrew Catholic school community. Every year, the Ontario Catholic School Trustees’ Association provides our Catholic schools with a resource kit to help schools prepare for Catholic Education Week. Using these resources, as well as our own developed activities we will be preparing a series of activities which will highlight how we are faithful in learning and serving in the love of Christ. Lord of love and Lord of peace Lord of resurrection life Be known Through our lives and through your power Christ the Lord is risen today. If there are any special learning needs your child has that you feel we should know when making up classes, please do so in writing to Mr. LaCute by May 1st. Letters that list a request for a specific teacher will not be considered. Please limit comments to specific learning styles. Requests for your child to be placed with a ‘friend’ will not be considered. If you feel your child has an ongoing conflict with another child, and you have already had discussions with this year’s teacher, please write us a letter and we will do our best to separate them. All staff members work hard to balance class lists by abilities, gender, and learning styles. Please bear in mind that we are considered a small school(400 students) and will result in combined classes throughout the school year. This is a fact of life that children will have to experience from time to time. Please keep in mind that requests for students not to be placed in a combined grade will not be considered. Welcome to Kindergarten Night For parents and their children new to school, we are inviting you to come to our Welcome To Kindergarten Night on Wednesday, May 20th at 6 p.m. FDK teachers will be leading parents and children through some learning activities that can be replicated at home. Just for coming, you will receive a free take-home kit to use before school starts! District Support at St. Andrew As part of a District Support Day on March 4th at St. Andrew School, the School’s team brought together 15 community partners(i.e. DCAFS, St. Timothy’s Parish, Kerry’s Place and Erinoak Kids) together in the library to showcase their involvement and teamwork with the school. Visiting Superintendent Les Storey, Jacquie Traverse-Thomas, Ministry of Education Student Achievement Officer and four local principals had the opportunity to speak to all partners to get an understanding of their working relationship with staff, students and parents. Also displayed at the ‘Living Library’ were many of the parental engagement initiatives undertaken this year as part of St. Andrew School’s collaborative inquiry. Together in faith and excellence 3 International Day of Pink April 8 April 8th, marks the International Day of Pink. It is a day where communities across the country, and across the world, can unite in celebrating diversity and raising awareness to stop all forms of bullying. The International Day of Pink was started in Nova Scotia when two heterosexual high school students saw a gay student wearing a pink shirt being bullied. The two students intervened and helped the student, but wanted to do more to prevent homophobic and transphobic bullying. They decided to purchase pink shirts, and a few days later got everyone at school to arrive wearing pink, standing in solidarity. The result was that an entire school stopped homophobic and transphobic bullying. The message was clear - anyone can bully, anyone can be victimized by bullying, but together we can stop it. No one should have to experience the negativity created by any form of bullying or discrimination. Day of Pink is more than just a symbol of a shared belief in celebrating diversity - it's also a commitment to being open minded, accepting differences and learning to respect each other! So each year on the second Wednesday of April, millions of people around the world wear pink to remember that positive actions do make a difference. And that the change starts with each one of us! Caledon Equestrian Park (just 20 minutes away!) will be the host site for the horse jumping and dressage events. Your family can watch a preliminary equestrian event for about $30 a ticket. This will be the only time such an international sporting event of this magnitude (similar to the Olympics) comes so close to Orangeville! A new series of tickets are being released online on December 8th. Visit the official Pan Am Games website at: www.toronto2015.org Volunteers (16 yrs. or older) are still needed if you are interested and can commit some time during the event. Our Virtue for the month of April is Love Batteries/Electronics During this school year, we have been collecting batteries and old electronic devices to help with recycling and our Eco-initiative. Please continue to drop off any electronics and batteries to the school. We have also provided an attachment that talks about the battery recycling initiative. The deadline is April 24th. Follow Us on Remind Now! For those parents already using Remind one-way communication from your child’s teacher, Mr. LaCute has started his own to send school-wide messages! For those of you who are interested but have never used it, it is very easy. Read on! God wants us to serve and to see goodness in everyone we meet. A loving person: •wants the best for others •is willing to make sacrifices for the good of others •knows that we are all lovable •prays for others God has given us many people in our lives to show us examples of Love. Our families, teachers, and friends show us their love everyday. We should always try to remember to Jesus taught the most important lesson. He taught about love and that love is not about us - it is about looking out for the good of others. Together in faith and excellence 4 Nut Allergy Alert! We have several students who have life threatening allergies to nuts, sesame seeds and/or peanuts. We are asking that you help us make St. Andrew an allergy aware school by refraining from sending your children with peanut butter or other products containing nuts or nut oils (i.e., Nutella). If these students come into contact with anything containing nuts, nut oils or derivatives, it could be life threatening. Some students have such a severe allergy that only the smell of the allergen may cause a reaction. Confirmation Change For Sept. 2015 Under Code 891 of the Code of Canon Law, Confirmation is to be administrated at the age of discretion unless the Bishops’ Conference has decided on a different age. The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops have decreed that, in our rite, the sacrament of Confirmation shall be conferred at an age determined by the diocese. The Archdiocese of Toronto has notified us that the elementary school grade for candidates for confirmation is to be moved from Grade 8 to Grade 7, effective September 8 2015, in terms of sacramental preparation. Local pastors have been notified. This means that for the next school year grades 7/8 will be confirmed together.
