THE SEASON OF
EASTER PRAYER
Lord of life
We pray for all who bring your word of life
As a light to those in darkness
For those who bring your word of peace
To those enslaved by fear
For those who bring your word of love
To those in need of comfort
Lord of love and Lord of peace
Lord of resurrection life
Be known
Through our lives
and through your power
Christ the Lord is risen today. Alleluia

Catholic schools are Catholic communities. Catholic
schools are faith communities. We, as teachers,
principals, support staff, students and parents, walk
and grow together in faith which we received
initially at our Baptism. Our growth is primarily a
relationship with God, who at our Baptism, called us
by name. But the way each of us respond to that
growth is both personal and communal. We grow in
faith in the nurturing atmosphere of our Catholic
community, be that of our local parish of St.
Timothy Church, our home, or here at St. Andrew
School.
Our school community will be celebrating Catholic
Education Week (May 1st- 6th) in ways that are
appropriate to our students’ ages and development.
The theme this year is “Open the Doors of Mercy”.
There are five sub-themes for each day of Catholic
Education Week:
Monday - Mercy that Welcomes
Tuesday – Mercy that Loves
Wednesday – Mercy that Forgives
Thursday – Mercy that Lives the Gospel
Friday – Mercy that Rejoices
Every year, the Ontario Catholic School Trustees’
Association provides our Catholic schools with a
resource kit to help schools prepare for Catholic
Education Week. Using these resources, as well as
our own developed activities we will be preparing a
series of activities which will highlight how we are
faithful in learning and serving in the love of Christ.

International Day of Pink April 13
April 13th, marks the
International Day of Pink. It is
a day where communities
across the country, and
across the world, can unite in
celebrating diversity and raising awareness to stop all
forms of bullying. The International Day of Pink was
started in Nova Scotia when two heterosexual high
school students saw a gay student wearing a pink shirt
being bullied. The two students intervened and helped
the student, but wanted to do more to prevent
homophobic and transphobic bullying. They decided to
purchase pink shirts, and a few days later got everyone
at school to arrive wearing pink, standing in solidarity.
The result was that an entire school stopped
homophobic and transphobic bullying. The message
was clear - anyone can bully, anyone can be victimized
by bullying, but together we can stop it. No one should
have to experience the negativity created by any form
of bullying or discrimination. Day of Pink is more than
just a symbol of a shared belief in celebrating diversity it's also a commitment to being open minded, accepting
differences and learning to respect each other! So each
year on the second Wednesday of April, millions of
people around the world wear pink to remember that
positive actions do make a difference and it starts with
us! And that is why we are standing strong and
participating in the International Day of Pink and
celebrating the day as part of our Virtue of Love
assembly on April 13th at St. Andrew School!

A special thank you for all those
who contributed a toonie for our
ShareLife fundraiser. Altogether,
we raised a total of $792.90. A
good time was had by the fans in
the stands and the players alike.
A special thank you to the
parents who were able to join

help. Enjoy that goal you scored Mr. LaCute because it
may be the only one you ever get against the students’
team again!
Project “Sunglasses for Guatemala”
Mrs. Kingstone’s Grade 2/3 class has a service project.
They are collecting non-prescription sunglasses (new or
used, adult and child). The school had a presentation at
the February Virtue assembly by Mrs. Dodds, (Mrs.
Kingstone’s mom) and we learned about Xela –Aid
Humanitarian work in Guatemala. The sunglasses that
we are collecting will be taken this summer to the two
communities serviced by Xela Aid. You can learn more
at http://www.xelaaid.org if you wish. We are only
focusing on the optometry section. Mrs. Kingstone’s
mom has been doing mission work with Xela Aid for
over 20 years. Please look through your home for
sunglasses you no longer need or make a dollar store
purchase. This simple donation can prevent an adult or
child from going blind from the intense sun. Sunglasses
can be delivered to the main office. Thank you for
helping with this worthwhile project led by our Gr. 2/3s!

Lunch Provider Parent Survey
Ms. Hageman and the School Yearbook Committee are
really excited about putting the finishing touches on our
first ever school wide yearbook! New technology
available will allow you and your children to use a free
‘Aurasma’ app to hold over certain photographs
throughout the yearbook and they will come ‘alive’ in
video form! Amazing! For everyone, including those
parents who put their name down to show your interest
at the Report Card Interview Night, visit the website to
order ($25 per yearbook). Deadline online is May 15th.
LunchBoxOrder.com, which is the current Pita Pit lunch
provider, would like to get your feedback as to what
other lunch options you and your children might be

lunch options moving forward. Complete by April 22nd.

follow in order to exit the school safely. Students and
staff will continue to discuss and practice procedures
that are implemented in the event of an emergency
lockdown.

Class Lists for September 2016
Teachers will meet in May to
organize class lists for the 20162017 school year. If there are any
special learning needs your child
has that you feel we should know
when making up classes, please do
so in writing Mr. LaCute by May 2nd. Letters that list a
request for a specific teacher will not be considered.
Please limit comments to specific learning styles.
Requests for your child to be placed with a ‘friend’ will
not be considered. If you feel your child has an ongoing
conflict with another child, and you have already had
discussions with this year’s teacher, please write us a
letter and we will do our best to separate them. All staff
members work hard to balance class lists by abilities,
gender, and learning styles. Please bear in mind that we
are considered a medium-sized school (400-450
students) which will result in some combined classes.
This is a fact of life that children will have to experience
from time to time throughout their time at St. Andrew.
Come join Mr. LaCute and our entire
parent community in catching the
Orangeville A’s professional basketball
team’s Friday, April 29th home game vs. The London
Lightning! Imagine what fun it will be to sit together in
the stands and cheer on Orangeville’s very own
professional basketball team! Family Night gives you the
opportunity to buy 1 student ticket at $7.00 and get a
2nd one for FREE! (BOGO coupons available at the
office starting April 14th)
Go Girls! Program Starting
Big Brothers Big Sisters will be running a Go Girls!
Program at St. Andrew School for Grade 5 and 6
girls. This Program was at St. Andrew
School last year and few other years in
the past. Go Girls! is a mentor-led
program that uses fun and educational
activities to stimulate self-reflections and group
discussion about healthy living and emotional, social,
and cultural issues. Girls involved in the Go Girls!
Program will meet once a week during lunch hour for 8
weeks. Each week the group’s mentors will cover topics
in each of the following categories: active living,
balanced eating, and feeling good. Once Go Girls! is
scheduled to run an application will be given to all
Grade 5 and 6 girls. All inquiries can be directed to Mrs.
Zeidler, SERT.

P.A.L.S. Recess Program Coming
The P.A.L.S. Recess Program encourages all children to
participate in activities regardless of their gender, size,
or ability. P.A.L.S. was developed after a review of
existing playground leadership programs and
consultation with other health departments. There are
three objectives of the program: to increase physical
activity, to decrease conflict and reduce the incidence
of playground bullying, and to provide a leadership
opportunity for students. Mr. Glover, our Child & Youth
Worker and Mrs. Zeidler will be starting to train some
student leaders in April with the intent of implementing
the program in May.

Our Virtue for the month of April is Love
God wants us to serve and to see
goodness in everyone we meet.
A loving person:
•wants the best for others
•is willing to make sacrifices for the good
of others
•knows that we are all lovable
•prays for others God has given us many people in our
lives to show us examples of Love. Our families,
teachers, and friends show us their love
everyday. We should always try to remember to Jesus
taught the most important lesson. He taught about love
and that love is not about us - it is about looking out for
the good of others.
