EWC4U1-Herd Persuasive Writing – Assignment Task: Choose one of the topics listed below. Write a persuasive essay using this topic. Write with the intent of persuading readers to share your opinion - be convincing! Make sure you have formed a clear opinion on the issue – pick a side! Format: 5 paragraph format can be followed – more paragraphs are permitted essay must contain a thesis statement and at least 3 clear arguments essay must contain an introduction and conclusion essay must include facts and evidence o Do some research! o Cite the sources 1500-2000 words (3-5 pages) Other: use some of the literary techniques suggested for a persuasive essay (e.g. diction, repetition, hyperbole, etc.) refer to the notes given in class for additional tips on writing a persuasive essay refer to the text – Writer’s Craft – p.37-47 – for information on writing leads, body paragraphs, and closings remember the emotional aspect of a persuasive essay! Evaluation based on: how persuasive your essay is – have you convinced the reader? how well you are able to incorporate the characteristics of a persuasive writing into your essay – have you used any literary devices, emotional appeals, logic, with any effectiveness? how well you use of arguments, examples, evidence – are they factual, relevant, convincing? Topics: 1) “Streaming” of students in high schools should be (increased/maintained/reduced/abolished) 2) The government (should/should not) require that all plastic containers be biodegradable. 3) The minimum driving age should be (raised/lowered/maintained). 4) Car insurance (should/should not) cost the same for males and females. 5) The minimum drinking age should be (raised/lowered/maintained). 6) Stores (should/should not) be required to close on Sundays. 7) Students (should/should not) be suspended if they are missing required immunizations. 8) Passing the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (should/should not) be mandatory for high school graduation.
