ACCELERATED READER The Accelerated Reader program at Campion is designed to allow students to select some novels, plays, graphic novels, biographies, and informational texts to read which personally interest them. The program is intended to promote reading and is a mandatory component of all grade 9, 10, and 11 academic and advanced placement English classes. In fact, grade 9, 10, and 11 students in academic and advanced placement English must use an appropriate grade level AR text to complete the Culminating Performance Task, which is assigned in Term 2 of each semester. Students will be reminded to acquire their points early and will be encouraged to select books that are academically challenging. In some cases, a Recommended Reading List will be provided. Each student is expected to gain a specific number of Accelerated Reader points which is determined by his/her grade and course level. While some time is provided in class to read, generally 30 minutes twice a week, students will also have to read on their own time to gain all their points. They are integrated into 70% Ongoing Assessment. Students need to know the following: The borrowing period for AR books is two weeks. Books may be renewed once. Students should not attempt the quiz until they have read the entire book. Students will not be allowed to take a quiz unless their English teacher has seen them reading the book in class. Students are not to attempt to take quizzes on movies that they have seen. Students cannot take quizzes on core texts – no 1D student can take an AR test for on Macbeth nor can a 3U student take an AR test for Life of Pi etc. Students will need their agenda signed or a pass from their teacher for the library and their Campion I.D. card in order to take a test Students may take only one quiz each day. Quizzes for each book may be attempted only once. If they do not pass, they may not try the same quiz again. Students will not receive any points for a book unless they pass the quiz. Partial points are only given if students achieve a pass, which varies from 60 to 70%, depending on the book. Students should know that more difficult books will have a pass rate of 70%. If students have an I.E.P., they can receive accommodations for the test. Points should be accumulated early in the semester. Hints for success: Students should choose a book they enjoy, not just one with lots of points! Start with a smaller book. Set reasonable goals. Keep trying!!
