CULMINATING TASK: A NEW DIRECTION
.Invented Art Movement.
E
very art movement has developed out of influences for or against movements
that have preceded them or developed concurrently. For example,
Impressionists began as Realists, who became interested in depicting flânerie
and the spontaneous effect of light on colour. Post-Impressionists, such as Cézanne,
took some of these elements and re-focused their artistic techniques, thus affecting
future generations.
You will form your very own art movement with (4-5) class members.
As a group, you will collectively decide on your movement’s name and brainstorm the
philosophical, aesthetic, critical and formal principles of your movement.
This will form the basis of your group’s *manifesto,
which you will each individually write in the form of an essay/report.
Ultimately, you will each create an original artwork in the style of your
invented art movement.
PART A
*A MANIFESTO is a published verbal declaration of the intentions, motives, or views of
the issuer, be it an individual, group, political party or government. A manifesto usually
accepts a previously published opinion and/or promotes a new idea with prescriptive
notions for carrying out changes the author believes should be made. (Wikipedia)
Manifesto Requirements:
❏ The names of your members
❏ Combine aspects of at least two historical movements starting from the
beginnings of art. [Don’t forget to consider the possible influence of nonWestern art such as Mayan, Japanese, African, etc (review Discovering Art
History pp. 78-143).]
❏ Reactions for or against art movements, ideology, social situations.
❏ State artists and specific characteristics, which have influenced your movement.
❏ Contemplate economic, political, cultural (cross-cultural pp. 64) and/or social
factors that will affect your stance.
❏ Is your focus emotional or intellectual (see pp. 66-67 for an explanation and a list
of movements)?
❏ Stylistic Characteristics and Media
❏ Subject Matter: Narrative, Religious, Literary, Landscapes, Cityscapes, The
Figure, Portraits, Historical, Genre Painting, Social Commentary, Still Life,
Animals, Abstraction, Non-Objective Painting (read pp. 20-29)
