INFORMATION/DISCUSSION/PRESENTATIONS
1. OEI Update
Tina Esparza-Luna
1
Hartnell College Vision Statement: Hartnell College will be nationally recognized for the success of our students by developing leaders who will
contribute to the social, cultural, and economic vitality of our region and the global community.
Hartnell College Mission Statement: Focusing on the needs of the Salinas Valley, Hartnell College provides educational opportunities for students to
reach academic goals in an environment committed to student learning, achievement and success.
Lindsey, Carol, Mai-Britt, and Tina attended the OEI conference. Lindsey had 1-on-1 with evaluators and content
evaluated. All DE instructors orientation modules should get in early fall to put into courses. 60 classes launched this
semester into OEI. Carol H. - We don’t get to have canvas yet, but can setup account to get ready to learn it. MaiBritt - full launch will be 8 colleges to work out kinks and then will open to all colleges for a trial period. Full launch
will pilot exchange for local courses. SP16 will be able to share students from other colleges. For now, it will work with
only our students. Tina Esparza – APP review was similar to an interview. They reviewed teaching style, pedagogy,
and course design. There is no reason other instructors can’t submit a course. Instructors should be encouraged to
submit courses. Instructors must qualify and meet specific criteria. Review process takes more than 2 weeks. Mai-Britt
suggested an instructional video could be made to show how to setup a course.
2. Canvas
Tina Esparza-Luna
CCMS selected for OEI committee has positive feedback about Canvas. Spoke to Matt Coombs and we wouldn’t be
moving to canvas anytime soon. Benefits of canvas: Save almost $20,000 a year, inline grading, videos, inline rubrics,
and it’s far less confusing for students. Tina suggested a survey be sent to faculty regarding canvas. Lori recommends
a survey be done, a workshop to show Canvas, take it to senate, and share with counsels. Lisa will take to senate.
Megan will find out when Etudes contract ends.
3. Review of DE Plan
Mai-Britt Kimm
Strategic priorities are aligned. Executive Summary needs to be reviewed. Budget needs to be included to plan. Action
plan – We need to change dates or state complete. Lori Kildal- Committee needs to have PPA to be recognized as a
program for funding. Mai-Britt and Tina will review and come up with the amount needed. Lori Kildal suggested
committee applies for conference funding through Professional Development Committee. Maria – Everyone in
conference should give feedback in regards to budget. Tina will put responses in shell.
4. Regular and Effective Contact Policy
May not need to make changes, but wants to review to make sure it’s valid.
