MITOSIS Cell Division: involves the division of nuclear materials and the sharing of the cytoplasm, which includes the organelles. Mitosis: the process of dividing nuclear material. Phases of Mitosis 1. INTERPHASE: cell grows and prepares itself for cell division by duplicating its genetic material. 2. PROPHASE Chromosomes made up of two identical strands of genetic information, shorten and thicken. Nuclear membrane begins to fade, it is dissolving. 3. METAPHASE Doubled stranded chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell. 4. ANAPHASE Each chromosome splits The two halves move to opposite poles of the cell. Each daughter cell will get a complete set of genetic information. 5. TELOPHASE Chromosomes reach opposite poles of the cell and a nuclear membrane begins to form around each set. Cytokinesis begins (separation of cytoplasm and its contents into equal parts). Two daughter cells are formed. 6. INTERPHASE Daughter cells begin growth and duplication of genetic material.
