Department of Computer Studies Ascension of Our Lord Secondary School Course Code: ICS3U1 Course Name: Computer Studies Level: Grade 11 University This course introduces students to computer science. Students will design software independently and as part of a team, using industry-standard programming tools and applying the software development life-cycle model. They will also write and use subprograms within computer programs. Students will develop creative solutions for various types of problems as their understanding of the computing environment grows. They will also explore environmental and ergonomic issues, emerging research in computer science, and global career trends in computer-related fields. PREREQUISITE: None Overall Course Expectations: Programming Concepts and Skills Demonstrate the ability to use different data types, including one-dimensional arrays, in programs. Demonstrate the ability to use control structures and simple algorithms in computer programs. Demonstrate the ability to use subprograms within computer programs. Use proper code maintenance techniques and conventions when creating computer programs. Software Development: Use a variety of problem-solving strategies to solve problems independently and as part of a team. Design software solutions to meet a variety of challenges, using a set of standards. Design simple algorithms according to specifications. Apply a software development life-cycle model to a software development project. Computer Environments and Systems: Relate the specifications of computer components to user requirements. Use appropriate file maintenance practices to organize and safeguard data. Demonstrate an understanding of software development process. Computers and Society: Describe policies on computer use that promote environmental stewardship and sustainability. Demonstrate an understanding of emerging areas of computer science research. Describe postsecondary education and career prospects related to computer studies. Efforts will be made to meet the individual learning needs of students to promote student success with respect to meeting these expectations. Parent’s/Guardian’s Signature: _________________________ Date: _______________ Course Outline: Resources: The course will use a variety of resources that will include the Internet, computer software technology, and printed resources. The primary textbook will be distributed to students during the first week of the course. The text and all other resources assigned to each student are the responsibility of the student. Any damage incurred will result in payment for replacement. Course Introduction & Review Unit Unit Unit Unit Unit Unit 1: 2: 3: 4: 5: 6: Computer Environments and Systems Introduction to Java Data Types and Control Structures Object Oriented Programming Arrays and Strings Computers and Society Replacement cost for the text is $80.00. Summative Review & Evaluation Summative Tasks will be administered towards the end of the course, and will be weighted 15% Culminating Task and 15% Final Examination. All timelines as stated are approximate. Evaluation Policies 1. Evaluation and assessment will be in accord with our school policy as outlined in the agenda. 2. Students will be assessed & evaluated according to the work produced & skills displayed. Methods of providing feedback may include assessing work in process & evaluating completed assignments, quizzes, tests, co-operative learning activities, investigations and presentations. 3. Student marks will be determined by evaluating process & product according to 4 categories (see below) & 4 levels of the Achievement Chart as found in the Ministry Policy document for Computer Studies. Evaluation Structure:: Knowledge/Understanding Application Communication Thinking/Inquiry 25% 30% 20% 25% The above is reflected both in the term work (70% of the final mark) and the summative work (30% of the final mark). Summative work consists of the Final Exam (15%) and a Culminating Project (15%). 4. Feedback will also be provided for student learning skills. Working independently, teamwork, organization, work habits/homework, and initiative are assessed apart from student achievement in the four categories outlined above and will conform to the coding: E – Excellent G – Good S – Satisfactory N - Needs Improvement 5. Assignments submitted after the due date established by the teacher will receive a penalty in accord with our school evaluation policy as outlined in the agenda. No assignment will be accepted once a teacher has returned marked assignments. Chronic lateness indicates poor organization skills and will result in parental contact and be reported in the learning skills section of the report card. 6. Should a student miss an evaluation due to a legitimate absence, a note shall be provided to the teacher the day of the student’s return to class stating the reason for the absence and the parent/guardian’s awareness that the student has missed an evaluation. Makeup will be at the teacher’s discretion. Should such documentation not be provided, a mark of zero will be assigned. 7. Culminating activities will be due toward the end of the course, valued at 10% of the final mark, and will reflect course material and competencies not otherwise reflected on the final exam. May God bless your efforts this semester!
