Wilson 905-793-4861 VIRTUE FOR MARCH KINDNESS Kindness can only be seen through actions. We must show that we are kind by our words and our actions. And to turn our lives toward You. As a Catholic school community, the time of Lent means that we will continue to spend time in daily prayer and reflection, to give up something that distracts us from better knowing God, and to give alms (which can mean time, money, or possessions) to help people in need. Everything depends on the attitude in our hearts. God only wants us to change the things we do if it will make our hearts, souls and minds overflow with love for Him and for our neighbours. Although the practices may have evolved over the centuries, our focus during Lent always remains the same: to repent of our sins, to renew our Catholic faith and for us to prepare to joyfully celebrate the mysteries of our salvation. Page 2 March 14-18, 2016 EASTER 2016 The days of Easter weekend this year are as follows: March 25 March 26 March 27 March 28 Good Friday Holy Saturday Easter Sunday Easter Monday There is no school on Good Friday or Easter Monday. Students will be instructed to pick up their lunch from the lunch drop off area in the front foyer at 12:40pm. As we are a secure building we kindly ask parents to only drop lunches in emergencies and not as a daily routine. Students and parents will not be able to wait in the foyer area for lunch drop offs. Lunch Hour in the Office Although most days an administrator is either in or available to the office, the phones are answered by student helpers. Page 3 Child Pedestrian Safety Rules Presented by Safe Kids Worldwide – Safe Kids Walk This Way CLASS LISTS FOR SEPTEMBER 2016 If at all possible, walk with a group of friends. Choose a corner where cars tend to slow down the most when crossing the street. Walk across cross-walks and intersections only. Do not cross the street between intersections and parked cars. Look to your left, then your right, and to your left again before crossing the street Make eye contact with drivers to be sure you have been seen you and that all cars have come to a complete stop before crossing at an intersection or cross walk. Continue looking to the sides as you proceed once you have determined that you can cross the street safely. Understand and obey crossing signals. Do not start to cross the street until the Walk sign appears, but if you have already started to cross the street, get to the other side as quickly as possible. Remain alert to drivers, lights, engine noises and other indications of oncoming cars both before and as you cross the street. Avoid distractions: Don’t wear headphones, have hand held games, etc. We will begin work on next year’s classes in May. If your child(ren) will attend Lester B. Pearson Catholic Elementary School next year and there are any learning needs that you think we need to consider in making up classes (this does not include requests for specific teachers), please put this in writing to the principal. Educational reasons will be factored into the decisions which will be made by teachers, resource staff and the school administration. Letters must be signed and submitted to the Principal PRIOR to May 2nd, 2016. Community Partners-Mental Health and Addiction Nurse We would like to welcome Paul Benoit, MHAN (Mental Health and Addiction Nurse), from Central West Community Care and Access Centre (CCAC). He will be joining our special services team which will offer another layer of support for our school. Pearson's Junior Girls and Boys Basketball Teams attended the Mini tournament here at our school. Both teams showed a great deal of teamwork and LBP spirit. Your Eagles displayed their respect for their team mates, and the game in a demonstration true to the dedication found in our students. The Girls team would progress through the competition meeting and exceeding every challenge to finish in 1st place. The Junior Girls team is headed now to the BNE Family Championship. Mr. Bellizzi would like to thank the parents and students for their dedication and support. GO EAGLES GO! Stage 2 Chess Club Our students continue to be passionate and dedicated to honing their skills this year! Since our in-school chess tournament the Primary, Junior and Intermediate teams have been established and a second stage to chess club has started. Students moving on to these two groups competed to earn their positions and are congratulated for their efforts. A new practice schedule has been established providing play, practice, and lessons 6 times a week to the different groupings. We are continuing to prepare for the next level of competition and the potential of future opportunities to represent our school in competition. Our students stand ready to meet this next challenge at the Brampton North East Chess Finals on April 1st, 2016. Chess lessons have continued here at our school through the Chess’N Math Association. They are still running the Friday night (6pm to 8pm) program open to all. We at Lester B. Pearson recognize the benefit to student learning that a program like this offers and suggest that if your child is interested in continuing to advance their skill base that this program is worth the cost. I would like to thank the Sister Rebecca, Mrs. Carreno, Mrs. Fall, and Mrs. McCulloch for their volunteered time providing this next stage to our Chess Club to our students. DFS Canada and LBPCES have joined together in a fundraising campaign to generate extra funds for our school, while at the same time providing a great selection of high quality and unique products for our family and friends! You will be receiving catalogues containing various products from giftware, kitchen items to flower bulbs to plant in the spring! Please help us make this campaign a success!! More information will follow…… Anaphylactic Reactions to peanuts, peanut butter, nuts, tree nuts, seafood, shellfish, raw eggs, cooked eggs and fish exist in our school. There are several pupils at Lester B. Pearson Catholic School with severe food allergies that are life-threatening and we would like to thank you for your continued understanding and cooperation as a result of the request to avoid sending the above named products to the school. There has been a reduction in the number of these products brought to school in snacks and lunches, and we would like to thank you for continuing to avoid sending these products to school with your child. Since even a small amount of the allergic substance can cause a life-threatening reaction, keeping it out of the classroom is our best method of preventing a serious reaction at school. Remember cross- contamination can happen from common areas that all students use such as the gym, library, hallways, or visiting other classrooms. We also ask that Birthday Cakes and/or edible treats NOT be brought to school. Parents who wish to send in a token for the class may consider sending in pencils or donate a book or game for the class to enjoy. Thank you again for your cooperation in this important issue. Page 8 Speech Competition On Friday February 26, we held our annual speech competition for grades 4-8. Congratulations to our students: Isabel S., Tene S, and Kirsten V. who came in first, second and third in the Junior Division. Congratulations also go out to Paige E., Sydney J., and Shaun D., who will advance to St. Anthony’s Catholic Women’s League competition on March 6th! Once a week, during recess, interested students will be engaged in creating masterpieces with Lego. Days in March include: Grade 2 students: Thursdays (March 3,10) Grade 3 students: Tuesdays (March 1, 8) A big thank you to Mrs. Fall, Mrs. Salameh and Mrs. McCulloch for organizing. The Green Corner The Eco-Eagles have been very busy promoting environmental awareness in our schools, and planning our next campaigns. We were very excited to welcome the Earth Rangers for a special presentation on February 12. The Earth Rangers brought some special guests, such as a ring-tailed lemur, a serval (small African cat), a bald eagle, and a swooping peregrine falcon. In addition to being delighted by these majestic animals, students from Grades 1-6 learned about different threats some species are facing, and conservation efforts from organizations such as Earth Rangers and Nature Conservancy. If you are interested in learning more about the cause, you can visit www.earthrangers.com. Watch out for our upcoming campaigns in March: Earth Hour: On Friday March 11, we will turn out the lights and power down our electronics to promote energy conservation. You can participate in the global earth hour at home on Saturday March 19 from 8:309:30pm. We’re looking forward to seeing how our school community can reduce their overall energy consumption! The GREAT GULP: On Wednesday March 23 students and staff will take a synchronized “gulp” of tap-water, using our re-usable water bottles. This is taking place during world-water week, and will serve as a reminder to all staff and students that drinking tap-water is the best source of water, both for our environment, and our wallets! Heads up: In April we will be conducting a “battery blitz”, where we will collect used batteries to and take them so they can be disposed of safely. You can help by keeping all of your used batteries in a safe place until we begin the blitz during earth week. Thank you to everyone in our school community for your dedication to protecting our environment. Remember: Together we can keep the earth clean and Green! Friday, March 11th, 2016 is Hot Chocolate Day!!!
