ACTION ITEMS
Approval of Meeting Minutes
Approval of Minutes of the Advancement Council for December 19, 2013
MSC (Molly Lewis / Al Muñoz) Minutes of the Advancement Council from December 19, 2013 were unanimously
approved.
Program Review
Maggie Melone provided information on the NASA SEMAA program review. She is requesting expansion to reach out to
additional students. Due to the growth in the program and the interest in making it a continuous part of the institution,
program review includes changing Maggie from a professional expert to a grant director. Al Muñoz stated that
specifically the request should be: NASA SEMAA Director from Professional Expert to college employee with all benefits
provided. Maggie also stated that in order to connect with other SEMAA sites she is requesting additional travel funds.
She stated that development and promotional materials are covered by grant funds. Deb Kaczmar suggested that
additional detail be added to the program review for NASA SEMAA including more about public relations, major
challenges and obstacles. Renata Funke suggested adding to strategic priorities that robotics be implemented in K-12 in
South County due to two robotics businesses in that area.
Jackie Cruz reviewed the MESA action plan. She announced that MESA now has a full time Program Assistant. Also,
Mark Sanchez and Romero Jalomo have suggested a full time counselor for MESA. Renata Funke suggested exploring
ways for South County students to be involved in activities; this would involve arranging transportation. Jackie will ask
Bronwyn Moreno to include a plan for South County in the Program Review.
Jackie Cruz tabled SMI for the next meeting to include: Research Internships, Planetarium, and CSIT-in-3.
Jackie Cruz reviewed the Office of Institutional Advancement. She stated fundraising and corporate relationships are
strong, but there is not enough staff bandwidth to work with alumni. There are 40K alumni identified with contact
information and wealth screening. Jackie would like to expand by hiring an Alumni Relations Officer. This position
would handle alumni relations and special events. Through special events this position would raise enough funds to pay
for their position and seed a planned giving position. This would be a full time position. Esmeralda Montenegro stated
it would be to the college’s benefit to reach out to alumni. $50K from private funding has been invested to purchase
and clean alumni data contact and wealth screening information. Renata asked if there was room to grow the position as
part time. Al Muñoz stated the College Planning Council will be able to be most effective if they receive simple and
concise proposals. Tony Anderson stated that the request should include a projection that reflects that the position will
pay for itself and more. Jackie agree to add a projection.
Jackie Cruz went over the Office of the Executive Director. The annual action plan annual goal is to raise $2M from
private and $2M from public grants. The total 5 year funding plan is $14.159M with $20M being the stretch goal.
Strong communication with donors and stakeholders and alumni needs to be an ongoing activity to support the
development of funds from the district. Jackie is asking for training for the Executive Director and the Executive Assistant
along with a travel budget. She would like to add $10K for training and travel. Travel is needed to attend regional and
state grant collaboration meetings.
Approval of Program Review
MSC (Renata Funke / Al Muñoz) MESA, NASAA SEMAA, Office of Institutional Advancement, and Office of Executive
Director of Advancement Program Reviews were unanimously approved.
Molly Lewis abstained from voting as she was not present for the discussion of Program Review.
