TFebruary IMOTHY NEWSLETTER Page 2 of 7 In February we celebrate the Virtue of Respect God has given us the virtues of friends and companions to keep us company and to help us out along the way. Every person in our lives carries the Spirit of God – and so every person is our brother or sister through Jesus Christ. As brothers and sisters who share one Holy Spirit, we are all valuable to God. We all deserve to be shown courtesy, consideration, sensitivity and thoughtfulness, which are different ways of saying respect. That respect should come first and foremost for ourselves. We have to respect ourselves and then we will be able to respect others. We should also be able to expect to be treated with respect by everyone we meet – our brothers and sisters in Jesus. Through prayer and concentration, we can get better at respecting ourselves as well as respecting those around us. A Person of Respect… Treats himself/herself and everyone else with equal consideration and courtesy Uses a positive tone of voice and body language Avoids swearing, namecalling, put-downs, and inappropriate gestures Says ‘Excuse me’, ‘Please’, ‘Pardon me’ Avoids gossip Our bullying prevention theme for this month is: Telling an adult about bullying is not tattling. One of the main strategies we encourage children to use when faced with bullying situations is telling an adult. Although this sounds simple and logical, there are many difficulties and roadblocks associated with this strategy. Younger children struggle to understand the difference between telling and tattling while older children struggle with their desire to deal with situations independently. Reporting bullying is both a right and a responsibility. Everyone has the right to be safe and respected at school. The goal of telling is to keep students safe. Scholastic Book Fair Father Daniel Zanon School will be hosting the annual Scholastic Book Fair from Monday, February 1st to Friday, February 5th, 2016. As usual, students will have the opportunity to preview books and create a “wish-list”. Students will then have an opportunity to purchase books the next day. Our Family Night will be Thursday, February 4th, 2016 from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thank you for believing in books and in the importance reading has on your child's future. Your support is extremely appreciated. February Eco News Our grade 6, 7, and 8 Eco Dragonz are busy planning and working on our Eco-Initiatives for the next few months. They will be kicking off this month with promoting and encouraging our community to reduce their energy consumption and ecological footprint through two national events. On Wednesday February 3rd, we will be celebrating Canada’s Winter Walk Day. We are hoping for students and families to leave their cars at home that day and walk to school instead. Thursday February 4th, is National Sweater Day! Canadians are asked to lower their indoor temperatures by a degree or two in order to have a positive impact on energy consumption. By putting on an extra sweater to keep the chill away, we can reduce our energy use and impact on global warming as well as save a few dollars in our pockets! Let’s stay cozy and join in! Stay tuned for more exciting news and activities from our Eco Dragonz next month! The next installment in understanding our Catholic Schools heritage: 7. Were these four obstacles removed (see #6 in January’s newsletter!)? Yes. The United Legislature of Canada East and Canada West in 1853, 1855 and 1863 removed all four hindrances. There was no more double taxation. It did not matter if there was a Catholic teaching in the common school. The separate school board did not need the permission of the common school board to open a new or additional KISS AND RIDE separate school. The number of Catholic heads of family to establish a separate school was lowered from twelve to five. As a result, the number of separate schools grew considerably. 8. When the Fathers of Confederation came from New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Canada East, and Canada West to meet in Charlottetown and Quebec, they quickly concluded, in the words of one of the Fathers, Sir Charles Tupper, that “Without this guarantee for the rights of minorities being embodied in that new constitution, we should have been unable to obtain any Confederation whatever.” Page 5 of 7 February 2016 Father Daniel Zanon School Newsletter February 2016 Page 5 ofWeather 7 Inclement – Bus Cancellations During the winter months inclement weather may cause disruption of bus transportation and regular school operations.
