ST. JEAN-MARIE VIANNEY CATHOLIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOL 75 Jordensen Drive Brampton, Ont. L6X 0S1 Phone (905) 497 6888 November 2015 PRAYER IN REMEMBRANCE Loving God, you sent us your Son to bring your peace to the world. Help us to work for peace in our homes, our school, our city and our world. Protect all soldiers who are at war and bring them home safely to their families. Grant peace and consolation to the family members of soldiers who are grieving the loss of a loved one due to wars. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. AMEN. Message from the Pastor for the School Year of 2015-16 Dear Parents, Students and Friends of St. Jean-Marie Vianney Catholic School, I prayerfully invoke an abundance of Divine blessings upon the staff and especially our children that they may continue to grow in knowledge, character and faith during this new school year and throughout their lives! As always remember to pray for our parish family and ask God’s blessings as we build His kingdom here on earth. Please know that I am praying for you, and I ask for your prayers for me, that together through the intercession of Saint JeanMarie Vianney, our Patron and united in the Holy Eucharist, we will reflect the presence of Jesus to the world. Yours sincerely in the Lord, Fr. A child who is too ill to go out for recess is too ill to be at school. Your co-operation is appreciated in keeping your child home until they have fully recovered from illness. The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board annually provides parents with information regarding costeffective student accident insurance coverage. Although enrolment is voluntary, the Board encourages parents to take advantage of this inexpensive insurance coverage, especially if your child(ren) participate in sports, excursions/field trips, other extra-curricular activities and/or if parents do not have dental insurance coverage. Brochures for Reliable Life Insurance were sent home in the opening package. Enrolment in the program is required in writing. Please follow the instructions in the brochure. Further information regarding this insurance can be obtained by contacting Reliable Life Insurance at 1-800-463-KIDS (5437) or visiting www.insuremykids.com COLD WEATHER During the winter season the school receives calls from concerned parents as to how we determine when children will or will not be allowed outside for recess. It is generally accepted that when the wind chill factor drops below -28 C, students should not go outside for recess. Dufferin-Peel CDSB policy uses a wind chill factor of -25 C as the determining temperature. With the arrival of colder weather, students are reminded to dress appropriately (hats, mitts, etc.) and to wear all clothing that they came to school in. For health reasons, we ask that students have indoor shoes that are kept at school. Another reason for indoor shoes is that in the event of an emergency evacuation, students will not have the opportunity to put boots on. Please make sure clothing is labeled - this will help with lost items REMEMBRANCE DAY LITURGY We would like to extend a warm invitation to all members of our community to please join us in prayer and remembrance on Wednesday, November 11th @ 10:45am, as we honour the men and women who have served and continue to serve our country. Scavenger Inquiry (Ms. Ruszczak) On Halloween Friday, the French junior students were having a Spooktacular Scavenger Inquiry period, using iPADs to read QR codes, in which they searched for newly acquired vocabulary, but also worked cooperatively to solve the mystery-case in French. FLAG FOOTBALL St. Jean-Marie Vianney hosted the inaugural Brampton West Family of Schools Co-Ed Flag-Football Tournament. We entered two teams and both teams were involved in some nail biting games. Vianney lost a very close semi-final game 6-0. The Tournament was won by St Lucy who was undefeated through six games. Go Voyageurs! Casual Fridays You may have noticed that the staff dresses in a casual manner on Fridays. Through donations made on these Fridays, we are supporting the many charities affiliated with the United Way and Share Life. Newsletter #3 Congratulations to the 2015 Cross Country Team. Pushing, shoving, play fighting are forms of unacceptable play that compromise student safety. Please reinforce with your children the “keep your hands and feet to yourself” rule. To encourage appropriate and safe play, soft-skinned balls are being provided for use by our students during recess. Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board Reminders and Resources: Cold and Flu Season As cold and flu season approaches, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board continues to be vigilant in ensuring that our schools are clean and that our school communities are educated regarding good hand hygiene and cough etiquette. These practices are promoted on an ongoing basis, but as the prevalence of colds and flu increases, our board increases the cleaning of contact surfaces, as well as reminds schools to review cold and flu prevention with students and staff. Many resources are utilized from our regional health units. A reminder, as well, that communicable diseases can be contracted in public places throughout the year. For example, cold-related viruses, such as Enterovirus, are transferred from person to person through hand contact. Cold and flu viruses typically peak from December through February, but can start as early as October. Regional Health Unit Resources Please assist us by reviewing good hand washing procedures, as well as other preventative measures, as outlined in the various Peel Health and Wellington Dufferin Guelph (WDG) resources available to you through their websites. As always, children who are unwell, should be kept at home. Flu Clinics Also available on the Peel Health and WDG websites, are the schedules of local Flu Clinics. For more information, visit the health unit websites: The boys and girls have been working hard during practices: passing, setting and spiking. The team looks forward to hosting their mini-tournament on November 24. Eco News Make way for the Eco-Team and their various shovels, wheelbarrows and clippers! Recently, they took the time to clear the Vianney front gardens of weeds and laid down several sheets of landscape cloth and mulch with the aid of several student and teacher volunteers. In the spring, the EarthFriendly school group intends to introduce new plants to encourage the butterfly population. Dana A. Grade 8
