A Summary of Western Kentucky University Libraries Research Instruction
Reports for Fiscal Year 2011-2012
In fiscal year 2011-2012, Western Kentucky University (WKU) Libraries saw 874 hours
of instruction. This set the record for the greatest number of hours of instruction offered since
1994. The 31 individuals who contributed Research Instruction (RI) Reports tied the record for
number of contributors (calendar year 2010 also had 31 people contribute RI reports). In the
same fiscal year, the libraries held 667 instructional sessions (a tie for 3rd highest number of
instructional sessions since 1994). Fiscal year 2011-2012 also saw the 6th highest number of
attendees at those sessions (16,530) since 1994.
Reports came from all three library departments: The Department of Library Public
Services (DLPS), the Department of Library Special Collections (DLSC), and the Department of
Library Technical Services (DLTS).
The Department of Library Public Services led the way in terms of contributors (20…
64.52% of the total), sessions (468… 70.16% of the total), attendees (8,894… 53.81% of the
total), and hours of instruction (543.5… 62.19% of the total).
The Department of Library Special Collections had 10 contributors (32.26% of the total
number of contributors), 186 sessions (27.89% of the total sessions), 314 hours of instruction
(35.93% of the total hours), and 7,518 attendees (45.48% of the total).
DLTS had 1 contributor (3.23% of total contributors), 13 sessions (1.95% of the total
number of sessions), 16.5 hours of instruction (1.89% of the total hours), and 118 attendees (0.71%
of the total).
The average number of attendees per session was 25 people. The average number of
hours of instruction per session was 1 hour, 19 minutes. The average number of attendees per
hour of instruction was 19 people.
September was the busiest month in terms of sessions (129). February was the busiest
month in terms of hours of instruction (154.5), and number of attendees (2,833). July was the
slowest month for number of sessions (8), and for hours of instruction (11.5). May experienced
the lowest number of attendees (133).
