POLONIUS: WHAT DO YOU READ, MY LORD?
HAMLET: WORDS, WORDS, WORDS.
WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE. HAMLET, ACT II SCENE II
October 2015 Vol. 2 Iss. 2
Rake up the leaves, and rake in the knowledge!
Expanding our minds little by little can lead to magnificent changes, both in the
world and in our daily lives. This month we encourage our readers to look beyond
mainstream media and our oversaturated social threads. Dive into a leftist
newspaper, read up on a new religion, or look for news off the beaten path to help
broaden your mental horizons. The world is filled with stories of different people
and ideas, and we would love for our community to engage in widening its
perspectives. We hope everyone has a lovely and knowledgeable autumn season!

WIDE WORLD OF DATABASES
With the school year well underway, the library would like to highlight our amazing
(and amazingly full) database resources! Now, don’t worry if you aren’t sure where
to start; Ms. Corbett would be more than happy to give you the lowdown on
databases.
OCOTOBER 9
Filled with recent articles from a very wide variety of magazines, newspapers, and
scholarly journals, our databases are the one-stop-shop for important information.
Whether for an assignment or general interest, our databases make it easier to find a
slew of awesome material. Since searching is done across so many resources, you’ll
be able to compare a multitude of articles (and photos and videos) from all over the
world. With subscriptions to databases on literary critiques, global issues,
international newspapers, and Canadian media content, we’re sure we’ll have
something perfect for you.

BORROWING, THE WISH LIST, AND OVERDUES!
Sign-outs are in full swing! We encourage everyone to come find that taking-a-break
book or magazine needed for this busy season. If you don’t see something you want
or like, let us know, and we can add something to our wish book. Don’t forget to
return or renew your items before the due date to avoid fees.
Speak with Ms. Corbett or Ms. Mallen for more information on borrowing, the wish
book, and overdues. We can’t wait to see you here!

FEATURED REVIEW
Seconds by Bryan Lee O’Malley
GRADE 9 ORIENTATIONS
Written by the same artist/author behind Scott Pilgrim vs. The
World, Seconds is about the mistakes we make and how we need to
leave them in our past. Seconds was fun and enjoyable to read. I rate
it 4/5 and suggest others read it. This graphic novel would be
enjoyed by most high school students.
It was another great start to the
year with our grade 9
orientations!
Ms.
Corbett
showed our newest community
members where to find all the
most important information,
sure to come in handy over the
next four years. With a
scavenger hunt to start, the
grade nines were eager to
begin. A giant thank you to all of
our wonderful grade nine
homeroom
teachers
for
accommodating the library. We
are grateful for your patience
and participation!

ON DISPLAY THIS MONT H
Science Fact and Science Fiction
This month we’re aiming to expand your knowledge and your
imagination – through SCIENCE! Dive into great
environmental books like Save the Humans by Rob Stewart,
the author behind Sharkwater. Your Water Footprint and The
Smartest Animals on the Planet will help you understand how
the human and animal worlds work together. If you’d like to
add some imagination to your science, may we suggest the
ever-popular Hunger Games, or the rich graphic novel series
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. Our lower level display of
graphic works has been highly popular, so we are extending it
for a while longer. All our books on display are available for
check-out, and we would love for you to come and put some
SCIENCE into your life!
WORK YOUR BRAIN!
Below are thirteen 5-lettered,
everyday words, each of which
has had two of its letters
removed. In total, these 26
letters are A-Z. The remaining
letters in each word are in the
correct order.
REEL BOOKS
NEW BOOKS (A SMALL SELECTION)
The second installment of the Maze Runner
trilogy, Scorch Trials, hit theatres last month,
five years after the book release.
Fiction
Wonder / Palacio, R. J.
The Art of Fielding / Harbach, Chad
Americanah / Adichie, Chimamanda Ngozi
Recommended by Mr. Gill
Rumble Fish / Hinton, S. E.
Anywhere But Here / Simpson, Mona
Player piano / Vonnegut, Kurt
Winter of the world / Follett, Ken
Darkest mercy / Marr, Melissa
The film adaptation of the highly popular
dystopian novel takes some liberties with
plot, but maintains the action-adventure feel
of the original story. The story picks up with
Thomas and the Gladers finally outside the
Maze, only to be faced with more trials; some
physical, some emotional. The real test is
whether they can make it through the Scorch
(burned land) without succumbing to the
Flare (a deadly disease). This highly
anticipated sequel isn’t to be missed!
Non-Fiction
Green Living: No Action Too Small / Raatma,
Lucia
Ecologists: From Woodward to Miranda /
Housel, Debra J.
Going Organic: A Healthy Guide To Making
The Switch / Rau, Dana Meachen
David Karp and Tumblr / Vescia, Monique
Instagram: Kevin Systrom & Mike Krieger /
Rajczak, Kristen
