POLONIUS: WHAT DO YOU READ, MY LORD? HAMLET: WORDS, WORDS, WORDS. WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE. HAMLET, ACT II SCENE II October 2015 Vol. 2 Iss. 2 Rake up the leaves, and rake in the knowledge! Expanding our minds little by little can lead to magnificent changes, both in the world and in our daily lives. This month we encourage our readers to look beyond mainstream media and our oversaturated social threads. Dive into a leftist newspaper, read up on a new religion, or look for news off the beaten path to help broaden your mental horizons. The world is filled with stories of different people and ideas, and we would love for our community to engage in widening its perspectives. We hope everyone has a lovely and knowledgeable autumn season! LIBRARY NEWS WHAT’S ON THIS MONTH OCTOBER 7 Terry Fox Run Period 4: Library will be closed during the event. Page 1 of 2 THE BACK PAGE NOTES IN THE MARGIN FEATURED REVIEW Seconds by Bryan Lee O’Malley GRADE 9 ORIENTATIONS Written by the same artist/author behind Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, Seconds is about the mistakes we make and how we need to leave them in our past. Seconds was fun and enjoyable to read. I rate it 4/5 and suggest others read it. This graphic novel would be enjoyed by most high school students. It was another great start to the year with our grade 9 orientations! Ms. Corbett showed our newest community members where to find all the most important information, sure to come in handy over the next four years. With a scavenger hunt to start, the grade nines were eager to begin. A giant thank you to all of our wonderful grade nine homeroom teachers for accommodating the library. We are grateful for your patience and participation! Review by Simon Buschlen, Grade 9 student ON DISPLAY THIS MONT H Science Fact and Science Fiction This month we’re aiming to expand your knowledge and your imagination – through SCIENCE! Dive into great environmental books like Save the Humans by Rob Stewart, the author behind Sharkwater. Your Water Footprint and The Smartest Animals on the Planet will help you understand how the human and animal worlds work together. If you’d like to add some imagination to your science, may we suggest the ever-popular Hunger Games, or the rich graphic novel series Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. Our lower level display of graphic works has been highly popular, so we are extending it for a while longer. All our books on display are available for check-out, and we would love for you to come and put some SCIENCE into your life! WORK YOUR BRAIN! Anywhere But Here / Simpson, Mona Player piano / Vonnegut, Kurt Winter of the world / Follett, Ken Darkest mercy / Marr, Melissa The film adaptation of the highly popular dystopian novel takes some liberties with plot, but maintains the action-adventure feel of the original story. The story picks up with Thomas and the Gladers finally outside the Maze, only to be faced with more trials; some physical, some emotional.
