POLONIUS: WHAT DO YOU READ, MY LORD?
HAMLET: WORDS, WORDS, WORDS.
WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE. HAMLET, ACT II SCENE II
April 2016 Vol. 2 Iss. 8
April showers bring May flowers, green grass, new leaves,
and great reads!
This month, we celebrate the rain and wind that bring
new life to our environment. April’s a great month to start
that spring cleaning, both inside and outside of the house.
Donating to the Notre Dame electronic waste drive,
planting a small vegetable garden, and crossing those
forgotten chores off your list are fantastic ways to put the
dreariness of winter behind you! We hope you find
something new and exciting to see, read, or do this spring.

LIBRARY NEWS
ALL ABOUT THE H20 (THAT’S WATER!)
Earth Day is April 22, and the library has a (metaphorical) truck load of
great books and resources to help to get into the spirit of this rainy and
environmentally-friendly month! One of the greatest conservation
success stories was a film by environmentalist Rob Stewart entitled
Sharkwater, which uncovers and examines shark finning around the
world. If the documentary is too disturbing for you, we have the
Sharkwater companion book and
Save the Humans by Rob Stewart.
Available through our catalogue is a variety of shark finning
and ocean-related environmental videos. Peril at Sea and
Endangered Ocean are two great videos you can search for
through our catalogue. There is a wide range of videos on
nearly every aspect of the environment that any member of
our commuity can access through the catalogue. Go to
http://www.dpcdsb.org/ndame and click the Library tab to access our amazing catalogue!
ON DISPLAY THIS MONT H
Come check out our amazing upper and lower level displays created by Ms. Cisterna’s periods
one and two classes. Each class chose a wide variety of their
favourite books and recommended titles to artfully display this
month. Ms. Cisterna’s period one class worked hard on making
the upper display bright, colourful, and full of spring, while her
period two class selected a huge number of amazing titles to
display on the lower level of the library. With a wonderful focus
on graphic works and fiction
novels, everyone is sure to find
something that they’ll like.
The library would like to thank
both classes for their amazing work. Come check out a great
book – personally selected by Ms. Cisterna’s periods one and
two students – today!

FEATURED REVIEWS – BY MEMBERS OF MS. CISTERNA’S PERIOD 1 CLASS
Attack on Titan (series) by Hajime Isayama
Attack on Titan is a manga series that circles mainly around 3 friends
named Erem, Mikasa, and Armin who live in a place overrun with giant
bloodthirsty giants called Titans. Having lost someone to these
monsters, the three friends join the military to help defend their people.
In a turn of events, Eren learns that he can turn into a Titan. In his Titan
form, Eren can directly fight these giants. The series is amazing; I
recommend it and give it five out of five stars. Reviewed by Yeshdeep

DeathNote (series) by Tsugumi Ohba
DeathNote is a manga series about Light Yagami, who is at the top of his
class and bored out of his mind until he finds a notebook that belongs to
a god of death. The book has the power to kill anyone who has their
name written in the book. At first, Light thinks that the book is fake but
soon learns that it’s real. He decides to use the book to kill all the
criminals. The suspicious deaths draw the attention of a detective who
goes by the name L. Light meets the god of death who dropped the book,
while L assembles an elite team to stop the unknown killer. The series is
amazing: I definitely recommend it and give it five stars. Reviewed by

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
The intended audience for this book is 13+. I would give this book five
stars out of five stars. The book is about a 16-year-old girl named
Katniss Everdeen, who is from District 12. She volunteers to take her
younger sister Prim’s place in the Hunger Games (a televised battle to
the death). Prim is four years younger than Katniss. Katniss and Peeta
(who is also from district 12) go into the Hunger Games together. The
book is really good, but it is also really violent. Reviewed by Laura

NOTES IN THE MARGIN
Open Heart, Open Mind by Clara Hughes
With this raw and engaging memoir, Olympic
athlete Clara Hughes shares her
story of depression and
endurance. Though she spent her
teen years drinking and abusing
drugs, Hughes was able to
channel her anger, frustration
and raw ambition into speed
skating and cycling. She became
the first and only athlete ever to
win multiple medals in both
Summer and Winter Games. Told in an honest and
passionate voice, this memoir traces Hughes’
journey through mental and physical pain, to arrive
at a place of leadership, understanding, and love.

NICARAGUA TRIP
Closely following the original plot of Austen’s Pride
and Prejudice, but with the major addition of
zombies roaming the English countryside, the novel
follows the four Bennett sisters as they are trained
in martial arts by their father, and pressured into
marrying a suitable man by their mother. Mixing
18th century language with a modern genre results
in a funny and original novel.
