St. Marcellinus Secondary School Established 2003 ~ November Two Thousand and Seven, Issue One ~ PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE From The Principal’s Desk; To many students the mid-term report card is an affirmation that their hard work is paying off. To others it can be a wake-up call that the semester is half over and if you hope to be successful the time to buckle down has arrived. I invite all parents and guardians to our parent-teacher interview night on Thursday November 15th to discuss how we can continue to work together to ensure success for your child. Once again we hit the ground running on September 4, 2007. Our sports teams have represented us well, the band is practicing hard for their annual Christmas concert and their trip to Orlando in the spring, the drama club has plans for the Sears Festival in 2008 and a school play entitled “Leader of the Pack”. The Cheerleaders are always working hard supporting all of our sports teams as well as entering competitions themselves and the yearbook club is working hard in preparation for this year’s book. This is but a small example of our fall activities, there is no excuse for not being involved in something extra-curricular at St. Marcellinus. I continue to be proud of and impressed with our entire school community. Our annual awards evening was an example of the academic success that the vast majority of our students attain. I congratulate both students and staff for their hard work. May God Bless Mr. J. This year St. Marcellinus students will be globe-trotting once again. In the spring 2008, we will be heading to Rome & Greece where we will visit the Vatican and tour sights such as Pompeii and the Coliseum, the home of the first Olympics, and other deeply historical and religious sites. The trip is open to Grade 11 or 12 students who are in good academic standing, since we’ll be travelling at the end of April and will be missing five school days. There are still a few spots open so any interested students should speak to Mrs. Marshall or Ms. Madden as soon as possible as deadlines are fast approaching. Who Says Shrimps Don’t Grow On Trees??? The Hospitality & Tourism classes were busy preparing menu items for the Parent Councils 10th Anniversary reception held at St. Marcellinus. Melissa Rebello & Ashley Mourato created a tree using over 300 pieces of shrimp. Other menu items included Swedish style open face sandwiches, cheese & pate platters & other various finger foods. St. Marcellinus has been identified as a site for the Hospitality Specialty High Skills Major program. They will graduate with a Hospitality High Skills designation on their diploma. This exciting new initative will allow students to follow a pathway of courses related to Hospitality & Tourism. It will assist students in developing knowledge, trade related skills & techniques that will ease the transition to college, university, apprenticeship or the workplace. Interested students should contact Mr. Begin or Ms. Macri for details. Library This year started off with the exciting Harry Potter Event held in mid-August. Students participated in a fun afternoon of potion mixing, quill making, spell writing, trivia quizzing & discussing the latest book & film. We are once again running our White Pine Reading Club, meeting every other Thursday, during all three lunches. New readers are always welcome! On October 29th, the library was delighted to host our guest author, Edo Van Belkom, who shared his insights on writing & read from his short story collection. Mr. Van Belkom is a Brampton writer with 25 published works, primarily in the horror genre. Staff & students were captivated by his spine tingling tale! In conjunction with the Social Science Dept., the library ran a mock election, Ontario Student Vote, on October 4th; a great opportunity for students to familiarize themselves with political issues & the electoral process. Approx. 200 students voted in a Liberal majority. Students interested in earning their community service hours can apply for several different activities. The Courtneypark Branch Library has started a Community Book Club, which meets the third Monday of the month, Start Spreading the News!!! The Comm Tech & Drama departments are busily planning our second trip to New York City. Forty students have been invited to attend this school year's trip to the Big Apple in April 2008. Highlights to include visits to TV studios, the Museum of the Moving Image, Radio City Music Hall, Wall Street, Soho, & St. Patrick's Cathedral. We'll also be watching Broadway musicals! Stay tuned for details about a parent information night.
