MANAGING YOUR DIGITAL
FOOTPRINT
#SoMe is not to be taken literally
DE’AWN BUNCH, @DeawnB
YOUR DIGITAL FOOTPRINT IS EVERYTHING THAT SHOWS
UP WHEN PEOPLE SEARCH FOR YOU ONLINE.
FROM IMAGES TO COMMENTS AND BLOG POSTS, THIS
COLLECTIVE FIRST IMPRESSION CAN MAKE OR BREAK
YOUR ONLINE REPUTATION.
#1: CHECK YOUR PRIVACY SETTINGS
• You may think that your account is already on
lockdown, but Facebook and Twitter privacy
settings change often.
• Specify the audience
• Edit past actions with the activity log
• Change privacy settings of past posts
#2: SEARCH YOURSELF
• A picture can speak a thousand words, so make
sure you search for text and pictures.
• Make a self-search part of your regular
reputation management
• Represent yourself well and consistently
• Build your online network
#3: DELETE ABANDONED SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS
• Everyone doesn’t need to see your former awkwardness.
• If you still have a MySpace or Bebo, or some other obsolete account lingering
around, it’s high time to delete it.
#4: THINK BEFORE YOU POST
• Don’t publish offensive or incriminating posts.
• Share relevant and interesting information.
• Monitor conversations, but don’t be creepy.
• Use humor and sarcasm appropriately.
• Don’t hashtag everything
