This is the last newsletter for the 2014-2015 school year. I would like to thank all the
students and staff for a great year at Loyola. Loyola Catholic School has been in
existence for 37 years, of which, the last three years at our new school. I am proud to
be a part of a school rich in tradition and strong in its spiritual, academic and extracurricular activities. Loyola is rich in faith and academic values.
Loyola will have 2 retirements this year. Ms. Dugo and Ms. Lorraway. Both of these
teachers are outstanding individuals that have contributed so much to the Loyola
Community. We would like to congratulate these outstanding teachers and thank them
for all of their contributions to our Loyola Community. We would also like to thank all of
our Long Term Occasional teachers, Ms. Fanara, Ms. Oliveira, Ms. Pinto, Ms. Raid, Ms.
Marques, Mr. Denyszyn, and Ms. Czyrka, for their help in replacing teachers that were
on leave. I would also like to thank our replacement ERW’s: Mr. Smith, Mr. Patterson
and Mr. Bonillo. Fr. Francis is also leaving Loyola, so we would like to thank him for all
of his contributions to our Loyola Community.
In this newsletter we have listed many of our staff’s contributions towards extracurricular activities and the events offered at Loyola. We are very fortunate that Loyola
has a lot of dedicated staff and students involved in these extra-curricular activities.
I would like to thank all the students, parents and staff for all of your help and support
this year at Loyola. Special thanks to our Trustee Sharon Hobin, our School Council CoChairs Lynda McQueen and Vince Mammoliti, our Superintendent David Amaral and
our Parish Priests, Father Tim and Father Francis, for being visible, accessible and
supportive to our Loyola Community.
For those students that are graduating I wish you great success in your post-education
career. For those who are returning in the fall, please have a safe and enjoyable
summer.

Chaplaincy Report:
Where does the time go? Another year completed at Loyola.
It is at this time of year that I would like to say thank you to all the staff and students who helped
make the work of school-wide Chaplaincy such a success.
This year I want to specifically mention Father Francis, Associate Pastor at
St. Ignatius Parish, for his ongoing support of the Loyola School community. This July, Father
Francis will be moving to the Diocese of Hamilton as the Associate Pastor of St. Raphael Parish
in Burlington, Ontario.
From his regular Monday morning visits, to celebrating school-wide and staff masses, to coming
out to school events. Thank you for everything you have done to promote school unity and
community, Father Francis.
Father Charles Egbulefu, C.C.E. will be taking up the Associate Pastor position and we are
looking forward to getting to know him and working with him in the Fall.
I also want to thank the Loyola community for the ongoing support of the Share Life program.
This year, we were able to raise $1,500.00 to support Share Life’s various agencies. Thank you
everyone for contributing.
For those of you who are graduating, I wish you all the very best in your endeavors. Please
always remember to …
“ Go and Make a Difference in the world” - in whatever you do.
God Bless each one of you

From Your Catholic School Trustee By Sharon Hobin
Well finally. It seems that, all of a sudden, summer weather is upon us and so,
incredibly, is the end of the 2014-15 school year. As we reflect back over the year, we
can see that it was, in fact, a very successful year for Dufferin-Peel students in terms of
achievement, success and well-being. With steadily rising EQAO scores, matching or
surpassing the provincial standard in most assessment areas, and graduation rates that
are among the highest in the province, this board continues to be defined, in part, by our
high levels of success and achievement.
Yet, we are much more than that. Our commitment to helping each student fulfill their
potential, through the Ontario Catholic School Graduate Expectations, means that our
students graduate with the tools to become good, solid contributing members of the
communities in which they will live. We endeavor to bring programs to our students to
encompass the needs of all learners. “Each one called by name”. Isaiah 43:1
We have recently celebrated Catholic Education Week in our schools. It has been my
pleasure to attend liturgies, a Board wide Mass, school concerts, cultural festivals,
Shining Stars, Joe Sax Festival, sporting events and much more. As your trustee, I see
the contribution of dedicated teaching and support staff, administrators and senior
management who work together with trustees to facilitate conditions to foster success. I
also see, firsthand, the important role of our parents/guardians, working in concert with
the school and the parish in fostering conditions for success and well-being. We are
blessed to have such wonderful, engaged and dedicated Catholic School Councils that
support learning and student achievement as well as promote community building in our
schools. Special thanks to the Loyola Catholic School Council for your work in parent
engagement. You are the best!
We are facing challenges. We are seeing cuts to our funding of 1 to 2 %. While this
does not seem like a large amount, for us this will mean 12 to 16 million dollars in less
funding. It is the task of the Board of Trustees along with our staff, to deliver a balanced
budget and continue to provide quality Catholic educational experiences to our
students. And we will.
So, as we complete the final leg of the journey of the 2014-15 school year, I thank our
staff for your hard work and dedication. I thank our parents/guardians for choosing a
Dufferin-Peel Catholic education for your child(ren) and for entrusting them into our
care. It is a responsibility for which we are grateful and one that we cherish. To our
students, thank you for all you have done to contribute to the life of your school. For
those who are graduating and moving on to post-secondary education or the world of
work, may God continue to go with you and bless you on your journey. To our returning
students and families, I look forward to seeing you in September.
I wish you many blessings and best wishes for a peaceful and restful summer. And may
the good Lord always hold you in the palm of His hand.
Thank you for Choosing a Dufferin-Peel Catholic Education

Dufferin-Peel secondary school administrator named Principal of the Year
The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board is pleased to announce that Michelina
Battaglini, Vice-Principal at Loyola Catholic Secondary School, has been named
recipient of this year’s Principal of the Year Award by the Catholic Principals’ Council of
Ontario (CPCO).
The CPCO Principal of the Year Award originated in 2000 and recognizes the
exceptional school and community leadership of a principal or vice-principal in Ontario.
“We are extremely proud of Michelina and all that she has accomplished as a leader,
role model and colleague,” says John B. Kostoff, Director of Education. “Michelina is
truly worthy and deserving of this award, as it acknowledges her significant
contributions to the Board, the students, and the community she serves.”
In addition to being part of the administration team at Loyola, Michelina has made
considerable contributions on numerous board-level committees, including the Catholic
Board Learning Team, Leading Student Achievement, Student Voice Committee,
Student Trustee Elections, Research Committee, SkoVision Team and Program
Committee.
“Her strong devotion to the well-being of others and the commitment to her duties on a
daily basis makes Michelina an exceptional Catholic leader and deserving of being
recognized as CPCO Principal of the Year,” adds John B. Kostoff.
The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board would like to congratulate Michelina on
this outstanding achievement and send their sincere appreciation for her commitment to
school and community leadership.
The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board is one of the largest and most diverse
school boards in Ontario. It serves approximately 84,000 students in 149 schools
located throughout Mississauga, Brampton, Caledon and Orangeville. With over 11,000
employees, the board is also one of the largest employers in the region. For more

P.S. Ms. Battaglini moves to St. Michael’s SS in September as their Principal.
Congratulations, Ms. B, we will miss you !!!
It is not goodbye, but farewell
My Dear Loyola Warriors,
It just seems like yesterday that I was leaving Loyola after four years as Department
Head of Science to begin a new position as Vice-Principal of Cardinal Leger. It was an
emotional time for me as I had made some great friendships and I so enjoyed
teaching our Loyola students. Five years later I received another call from the board
office informing me that I was returning to Loyola as Vice-Principal for the 2013-2014
school year. I was so happy to return to a place of familiarity and to be able to work
with some great colleagues again, and of course, work with our Loyola students.
In the two short years that I have been back here, I have been witness once again to
what makes Loyola such a special place. From H.O.P.E., sporting events, different
extra-curricular clubs, Feel the Beat, JamFest, Spotlight, etc. (I do apologize for
missing some, too many to mention), it has all been fantastic.
It is bittersweet that I must bid you all farewell as I move on to Principal of St.
Michael’s for September 2015. I am so going to miss the great Administrative
Assistants who I have had the honour to work with. You are all one of a kind and I will
miss you greatly. You make coming to work every day a joy. To the many great
teachers on staff, you know who you are, I am going to miss working with you.
Continue doing what you do for students. They are our future and what a bright one
we will have with our Loyola Warriors.
Finally, to the Loyola students, always remember to reach for the Sky because even if
you happen to miss you will still be among the STARS. You are an amazing group of
students. I will miss you dearly. So, I bid you adieu and not goodbye as I know and
believe that some of our paths will cross again.
Take care and always remember to smile,
Ms. Battaglini

MS Awareness by. J. Oliviera
Coinciding with Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Month, the staff and students of Loyola
came together for a week of awareness and fundraising from May 11 th to the 14th. The
week kicked off with an engaging multimedia presentation from the Society’s Peel and
Halton chapters, mirrored by the informative posters provided that were displayed
throughout the school. From there, the grade 12 healthcare and ESL classes prepared
ribbons and candy for sale during the lunch hour with donations going towards the
Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada. As a school community we were able to raise
$500 and on May 24th, this donation was delivered at the Mississauga MS walk by
participating teachers, Ms. Oliveira and Ms. Marques. A very special thank you to the
generous Loyola community for their efforts in planning these events and contributing to
a cause that has affected the lives of many within our community.

A NOTE ON EUROPE by G. Spas
The European Tour 2015 was an
exciting and hectic adventure from the
moment we landed at Charles De
Gaulle airport in Paris to catch a
connecting flight to Berlin to the day of
our return to Pearson in Toronto, the Big
Smoke. Over the 12 days, our itinerary
was fast-paced and jam packed with fun
activities and interesting things to see.
The hotel accommodations were always
comfortable and the meals provided at
the various restaurants were well
prepared and tasty.
On one occasion, a memorable evening
was spent in Prague at a cavern-like
basement restaurant where we were
entertained by a pair of Czech
musicians (an extraordinary violinist and
skilled accordionist) who played
Classical favorites from table to table.
There was a light lunch in Luzern,
Switzerland at a lively cafeteria on the
top floor of a posh department store that
offered a vast selection of hot and cold
dishes at reasonable prices. I can still
savor the large mug of café au lait along
with a fresh croissant at
a Starbuck’s in Paris.
The transportation was in a large and
roomy coach supplied by EF (Education
First), our tour company. It was safe and
smooth thanks to our Polish bus driver
who had a good sense of humour and
who knew the cities well and navigated
the narrow streets and small parking
spaces effortlessly.
In Berlin, we were joined by a small
group of students along with three adult
chaperones (a teacher and two parents)
from Fort Worth, Texas. There was
ample opportunity to get to know our
travelling companions and to enjoy their
company during the trip until Zurich
where the two groups
parted.
Each day was thoughtfully organized
and carefully structured, usually
beginning with an orientation to a
particular city we were visiting by our
knowledgeable German tour guide
Nicholas Flocken. It would be a walking
tour or else a bus tour about an hour or
so in length. As an added bonus, one
day in Munich, a bicycle tour was
arranged for us so that we could see
more obscure places around the city like
the Beer Gardens by cycling at a
leisurely pace.
After establishing our bearings, we were
given at least two hours to explore a city
like Dresden or Munich in pairs or small
groups. Shopping was a popular option
or else one could visit an ancient church
or art museum to experience some
culture.
Some highlights included a visit to the
Neuschwanstein castle in southwest
Bavaria overlooking a bucolic mountain
valley or having a friendly snowball fight
at the summit of Mount Rigi in
Switzerland on a bright sunny day while
enjoying a panoramic view of the Swiss
Alps still covered in snow. Simply
amazing.
Our last stop was Paris and it was a
marvelous 2 days spent sampling the
ambient sights and sounds. Famous
landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, the
Louvre, the Musee D’Orsey and Notre
Dame Cathedral were awesome to
behold.
the flight crew catering to the
passengers’ personal needs at all times.
The night prior to departure was truly
magical. We were treated to a night
cruise on the Seine. Sliding along under
the many bridges that span across the
river, the city literally shimmered in
multi-colored lights.
In one word, the trip to Europe was
fabulous or as the Germans say
“wunderbar”. I highly recommend it to
anyone interested in having a great time
and a memorable cultural experience.
I’m already looking forward to taking
another tour next year. What more can I
say except WOW! Oh and be sure to
bring a camera or smart phone along.
The flight back to Toronto via
Amsterdam aboard KLM (the Dutch
airlines) was comfortable and pleasant,
See you there.
Attention Loyola Students M. Battaglini
Are you a traveler? Adventurous? Do you like exploring different
cities and cultures?
Then picture yourself stepping into history on the Great Wall of
China and into the future on the Shanghai bund, often called the
“Paris of the East” as well as visiting the world’s most important
archeological treasures. This very exciting 9 day trip is being
planned for March Break 2016.
If you are interested, please stop by the main office to pick up an
information package.
See you there!!!
