Reading
What good readers we are continuing to
develop into! The children were introduced
to their book boxes and will start putting
books in there next week to read
independently. We talked about how we
learn to read books by turning the pages,
studying the illustrations, and putting the
sounds together to read words. We also
listened to and learned about the different
genres, fiction and non-fiction.
Math
In math, we have been
working on representing
quantities from one to nine
with the five-frame. We
continue to play dice games
and domino games often.
Next week, we will practice
how to correctly write the
numerals 0 to 9. We will
sing songs to help us, and
there will be extra practice
pages coming home in your
child’s take-home folder.
Words Their Way
Words Their Way is a supplemental literacy component that is intended
to help students study, sort, and spell words. In our red notebooks, we
started off with concept sorts, such as fruit/not fruit, animal/not animal,
and shapes. Now, we will move on to sorting words that rhyme, by how
many syllables the words have, and by beginning sounds.
Science & Social Studies
Scientists use their five senses and that is exactly what we did this
week in kindergarten! We used our sense of sight, hearing, smell,
taste, and touch to explore apples!
Popcorn Words
Popcorn words (sight words) are the words that should “pop” into our heads quickly as we read!
Please review the words that we’ve already learned:

Jolly Phonics
In the past two weeks, we learned some
new letters/sounds – f, b, j, and z The
long “a” sound for ai, long, “o” sound
for oa, long “i” for ie, “long “e” for ee,
and the blend “or” were also introduced.
These are a bit trickier – we will continue
to work on them. I appreciate your
practice at home!
Apple Day
Next Friday, October 9th, will be Apple
Day! The children will be doing a lot of
fun apple activities, including making
applesauce in class. The ingredients are
apples, cinnamon, and water. If your child
cannot eat any of these, please let me
know. I am also asking every child to bring
2-3 apples (pre-sliced in a baggie) to
school next Thursday or Friday.
