September 30, 2014 Volume 4, No. 7 NEW MHSA PARTNERSHIP FOR LEARNING AND INNOVATION Through Prof. Karen Kent’s HESA 511 “Managerial Concepts in Healthcare Organizations” fall semester 2014 course, Xavier students have a unique opportunity to work with Xavier Health and its leader, Dr. Marla Phillips, on a special project to evaluate the importance of organizational culture and its impact on safety, performance and quality. Xavier Health works with industry leaders in the pharmaceutical and medical device industries, both of which are highly regulated by the US Food and Drug Administration. The FDA intends to develop metrics to proactively identify product quality and safety concerns that may be related to organizational culture. In particular, the focus is on how to measure a commitment to quality compared to a commitment to cost or other things. Our first-year students are organized into several industry groups to investigate leadership impact for a culture of quality and safety, and to see how organizations develop comprehensive plans for ensuring safety and quality. The groups also hope to identify methods organizations use to measure the impact of culture on the organization’s success. The groups got underway on Friday, September 12, 2014 with a presentation by Dr. Phillips, and this will conclude during the final weeks of the semester with group presentations. The groups are: HEALTHCARE John Dougan Tara Lysne Sammy Rawas James Roebker (MBA) AUTOMOTIVE Nicholas Fry Landon Graham Sadath Hussain Yogita Pradhan AIRLINES Amy Kidane Andrew Rehagen Tom vonAhlefeld CONSUMER PRODUCTS Michael Cirino Nikki King Ali Siddiqui GROCERY/RETAIL Tara Haskell James Horne Zachary Oglesby FOOD/BEVERAGE/ PET PRODUCTS Patrick Adams Eric James Eric Morris Guylyn Wade Marla Phillips works with first year MHSA students ALUM-N-I-C-E Our 1,524 Graduate Alumni are the pride and joy of Xavier and our HSA Department.
