XAVIER’S IPE FACULTY GOING NATIONAL
Dr. Rick Browne, our undergraduate BSHSA director, and other Xavier faculty who earned the master trainer designation for
IPE (interprofessional education) at the TeamSTEPPS event in San Antonio last fall will be traveling to Murray State University in
Murray KY to present at the “Collaborative Learning and Unlimited Excellence” (CLUE) Conference scheduled for April 4-6, 2013.
Our XU faculty will be sharing how they’ve used TeamSTEPPS with the IPE course that is underway this semester for students in
our health professions departments.
TeamSTEPPS stands for “Team Strategies & Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety” and is a teamwork system
developed by the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) to improve
communication and teamwork skills among healthcare professionals.
XAVIER’S SPRING 2013 IPE COURSE
The new IPE course for Xavier’s health professions students is underway for its initial time this spring 2013 semester and at the
midpoint the faculty involved met to review how things have gone so far and to do some “performance improvement” thinking.
The initial weeks of the course involved emphasizing the four “Interprofessional Collaborative Practice Competency Domains”
(values/ethics, roles/responsibilities, communication, teamwork) and aspects of the TeamSTEPPS training (team structure,
leadership, situation monitoring, mutual support, communication). The later weeks will involve simulation experiences using the
computerized simulation labs in the School of Nursing. Naturally, the course will continue to improve the more times it’s offered.
Our first-year MHSA students take the course during the spring semester and none of our students take it during the fall
semester.
