Using Your Online Biology Textbook
Name_________________________
Purpose: Study skills are essential to a successful high school career. One such skill is
knowing how to use a textbook. This activity is designed to give you the opportunity to
understand the way your online textbook is organized, and to teach you ways to use your
online textbook as an effective reference tool.
Directions:
1. Go to http://my.hrw.com
2. Enter the username and password provided by your teacher
3. Select “Go to Interactive Online Edition”
4. From the drop-down box at the upper left-hand side of the screen, select “Chapter
1: Biology and You” and hit the “Go” button.
5. Answer the questions that follow.
Questions:
1. List the 3 tabs shown at the top of the screen.

Page through this section of the book by hitting the “next” link. Find the
definition for universal laws and list it below.
3.
What color did the words “universal laws” appear as? What is the purpose of
using different print like this?
4.
What is one other word (s) that shows up with similar print?

You can have the textbook read aloud to you. Click on the eActivities tab at the
top of the screen. On the right-hand side, you will see a section entitled
“Textbook audio.” Explain what you would do in order to have the textbook read
to you.

This textbook also has concept maps that can help you to review content. Click
on the “scientific investigations” link under the “Concept map” section. On the
left, you will see a list of terms. Describe how you fill in the concept map with
those words, and what happens if you try to put the wrong word in the wrong
blank.
7.
Click on the “Types of Microscopes” link under Section 3 Tools and Techniques
on the left-hand side. How might this resource be helpful to you?
8.
Click on the “Student Resources” tab. Within this section are some resources
that can help you to prepare for tests. List one of those resources.
9.
Find the “Super Summary” link. Scroll down to find the “Key Terms” link.

10. Under the “Section Resources” section on the right, click on the “+” sign beside
“Section 2 Scientific Methods.” Select the “SciLinks” link. What do see listed on
