Antacid Laboratory Investigation
Your assignment:
 To design a laboratory experiment in which you test various antacids.
 You may choose what factor of the antacids you would like to test –
time to take effect, dosage needed to take effect in a certain amount of
time, cost effectiveness vs. dosage needed, etc.
 You will have the antacids shown in class made available to you, and
you may choose to test multiple brands.
 You will have the following materials available to you: HCl,
glassware, pH paper, pipettes, antacid products. Anything you feel
you need beyond that, you must ask whether it will be available.
 The experiment MUST be a controlled experiment, following all
“rules” of performing a scientific experiment.
 Labs will be done in class tomorrow. You must submit the following
to me BEFORE proceeding (*must be typed*):
o Background information – information regarding pH, buffer,
and how antacids work
o Purpose – detailing what factor you are testing; hypothesis, and
explanation behind hypothesis
o Materials list (* beside anything you want to use not already
listed above). Be sure to specify which brands you will use,
and how many tablets or doses of each you will need!!!
o Procedure – step by step instructions of how the experiment
will be performed (be sure to include any amounts of
substances used, relevant times, etc.
o Data to be collected – and a chart to collect it in.
