New taxes cause trouble • The government passes new taxes to raise money • One of the taxes was on alcohol – we still heavily tax “vices” today (cigarettes & alcohol) Farmers in Western PA grew corn and converted into Whiskey which was very profitable Many farmers hated the new tax and refused to pay it Thousands marched in protest and tarred and feathered tax collectors….. sound familiar? Washington calls up troops to put down the rebellion 13,000 militia men from 5 states Washington’s action demonstrates the power of the new government The rebels disperse before the army arrived Hamilton wanted leaders of rebellion executed Two were tried and convicted, but Washington pardons them, Why?
