Germany PowerPoint presentation by Joseph Granger S Germany today S The capital of Germany is Berlin S In the period of 1949-1990, Germany was divided between the east and west S Currently Germany is a unified country and a strong member of the European Union 1949-1990 S In this period East Germany and West Germany existed S The Eastern half was Communist and contained a Russian military presence, it’s capital was East Berlin S The Western half had a democracy, it had a military presence from France, England and the United States, it’s capital was Bonn S In 1989 the Berlin wall fell and the the country later rejoined under a Democracy Culture S Germany is known for composers such as Beethoven, Bach, and Wagner (Mozart was from Austria) S There have also been well known Philosophers like Goethe and Nietzsche S Germany’s people have a strong appreciation for the arts Language S The language of Germany is German S German has similarities to English Apple = Apfel Dog = Hund (like hound) Water = Wasser S German is spoken throughout Europe as a common second language S Many states in Germany have various dialects of the language Food S In the southern state of Bavaria dishes of Sauerkraut, Sausages, dumplings, and roasts are well known S Also popular are things such as Herring filets and a pasta known as Maultaschen S The country is known for candies like chocolate and the invention of the gummy bear S In the Schwarzwald area, the famous black forest cake was invented Business S Germany is known for it’s luxury goods S The brands BMW, Mercedes Benz, Audi, Volkswagen and Porsche are all from this country S The sports clothing giants Adidas and Puma come from the state of Bavaria S Germany is also known for it’s strength in engineering and industry Transportation S In Germany the Autobahn system is well known among Americans, It is very similar to the freeway but many parts of it have no speed limit S Many cities in Germany are connected by train and a preferred means of transportation for long trips.
