Mrs. Peterson Week of January 4, 2016 Class News Science Test There will be a test on the human body on Friday, January 8th. A study guide was sent home, but there is a copy of it on my webpage. What We’re Learning Reading- Students will continue our nonfiction reading unit. They will use text structure to organize understanding of a text, summarize narrative nonfiction, tackle hard words that complicate meaning, read to learn information, and identify what a subject learns. Writing- Writers will begin our persuasive writing unit. Students will write a thesis statement and give reasons to convince an audience, see a problem and come up with a solution, consider the audience they are writing for, and edit as they go. Math- This week students will use standard units Parent Reminder: We have library on Days 6 and 9. to measure the area of a shape, use unit squares and multiplication to find the areas of squares and rectangles, use areas of squares and rectangles to model the Distributive Property, use areas of rectangles to find the area of irregular shapes, and solve problems by breaking it apart. Science- Students will learn about the respiratory system and review for the test. Literacy Tip: Ask your child to describe the lesson their character learns. Math Tip: When completing area problems, have your child write square units after the number.
