I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to student veterans enrolled at the University of Houston. As your new
Interim Director of Veterans Services, I look forward to positioning this department to deliver exceptional service to student veterans as well as to dependents of
veterans. The staff at the VSO is
knowledgeable and eager to assist
on a wide range of topics and
questions related to VA benefits,
transitioning from military to civilian life, navigating the academic
environment, referrals to other
UH and community resources, and
much more. We encourage you to
take advantage of VSO services as
we partner in advancing your educational and career goals. Feel free

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF DR. DAVID SMALL Dr. David B. Small has over 35 years
of experience in student affairs administration, the majority of which
has been in career development,
personal counseling, alumni affairs,
and veterans services, including 12
years as administrative head of the
VSO department at UH. Dr. Small’s
academic credentials include Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the
University of Tennessee and a Ph.D.
in higher education and counseling
psychology from Vanderbilt Universi-
ty. He has authored numerous articles in professional journals and has
delivered over 300 presentations,
including keynote and commencement addresses for professional,
civic, and educational organizations
and has served as a consultant for
over 20 educational institutions and
corporations on a wide range of
organizational, career, and personal
development topics. Dr. Small has
been quoted in numerous national
publications, including U.S. News
and World Report, USA Today, The
New York Times, The Chronicle of
Higher Education, The Wall Street
Journal, Business Week, National
Business Employment Weekly, and
many journals and daily newspapers. He is a frequent guest on TV
and radio news/talk programs.

Veterans Services is pleased
to announce that a VA representative is now available at
the VSO as part of the VetSuccess on Campus (VSOC)
program to assist studentveterans with questions and/
or concerns on the following
topics:
Educational and vocational
counseling
Survivors and dependents
assistance
Adjustment counseling
Employment and career
planning
Referrals for more intensive
health services
Assistance in applying for
other VA benefits
The VA representative is Mr.
Ralph Harrison and he will be
available part-time through
December 21 and then fulltime after January 6, 2014. If

ons, or related field preferred Guitars for Vets is a national organization with chapters in 30 cities across the U.S. Veterans Services at UH is considering an affiliation with Guitars for Vets. We would first like to gauge the level of interest among student vets at UH for free guitar lessons. Lessons would
be provided once per week in small group sessions on Friday afternoons. Guitars would be provided for lessons and on a check-out basis
for practice at home. Let us know if you would be interested in, and
committed to, free guitar lessons. Beginners and intermediate-level
players would be welcome. If interested, contact us by email at
