U.S. Constitution, Article 1, Section 8, Clause 8 (the Intellectual Property

Clause, also called the Patent and/or Copyright Clause): “Congress shall have the Power... To promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by securing for limited Times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and Discoveries.”

This clause of the Constitution generally protects the rights of authors and inventors to buy, sell or derive income from their writings and discoveries for a limited time.
