St. John XXIII Catholic Elementary School Learning Plan Mission * The mission of St. John XXIII Catholic School is to foster an inclusive, Christian environment that allows all learners to achieve to their full potential as measured by the Ontario Provincial Standards. We are committed to collaboratively assessing the diverse needs of our student community and effectively responding with a comprehensive system of support that will ensure improved student achievement. As stewards of Christ and a "Family of Peace and Hope", we strive to continually embrace and celebrate the gospel values that demonstrate an emotionally safe spiritual environment for all children to succeed. Motto A Family of Peace and Hope Catholic Focus St. John XXIII Catholic School St. John XXIII Catholic Elementary School, located in Mississauga at 915 McBride Ave, opened in September 1972 and was blessed on June 19, 1973. The school population of approximately 200 students reflects the diversity of central Mississauga. The school is named for the humble pope who was beatified in 2003. Pope John XXIII was always inclusive in regard to the diverse sectors within the Church and even extending a warm embrace to those outside Catholicism. He became the exemplar for accommodating diversity and offering the opportunity for growth and development to all. The school logo adapts John XXIII’s papal coat of arms. In 2005, the school adopted John XXIII’s personal motto “Obedience and Peace.” In 2007, it was adapted to “A Family of Peace and Hope” to align with our Catholic virtues. On April 27, 2014, Blessed John XXIII was canonized and is now known as St. John XXIII. In turn, we are now named St. John XXIII Catholic School. We celebrate his feast day on October 11th. In June 2006 the students and staff dedicated a peace pole to a student who had passed away after a short battle with cancer. With the guidance of a technology teacher, students handcrafted the pole, which displays the prayer, “May Peace Prevail on Earth,” in different languages. St. John XXIII Catholic School has always welcomed opportunities to strengthen the school-parish partnership with St. Martin of Tours Parish. We have worked collaboratively as stewards of Christ to take part in social justice initiatives. These include: food drives, participation in the parish’s ShareLife campaign and sponsoring families at Christmas, Dr. Simone Hallowe'en Candy Drive, Plan Canada, etc. Core Principles Catholicity 1.
