Ambrozic Riverhawk Chapliancy (ARC)
This past month ARC has been very busy. Between helping to prepare for Lent by making over
700 pancakes for students and staff, to running
Lenten masses and spearheading the school’s
used clothing drive, our worker bees have definitely exemplified how they are the hands and
feet of Christ. One of the highlights of February
was our outreach trip to Dr. Simone’s Warehouse,
formally known as Canadian Food for Children.
Here, students packed large shipping crates of
clothing, cookies, and other items to be sent to
Ghana. They also helped to stamp and address
over 1000 donation letters. Cardinal Ambrozic also donated over 15 bags of clothing to Dr. Simone for shipment. CA has a long-time partnership
with Dr. Simone’s warehouse, a partnership which
is very valuable to us and to our students. ARC
has been preparing a Syrian refugee child backpack program, going on Street Patrol and running
our school’s Stations of the Cross and Holy Thursday assembly.

This year, for the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, Cardinal Ambrozic has begun sponsorship of a
child through the Canadian Catholic Charity Chalice.
Meet Anthika! She was born on August 14, 2005 and lives in
Bellary, India. Anthika lives with her parents and her one
brother in a one room hut with cement walls, stone floors and
a tin sheet roof. She attends St. Joseph’s Girls School and is in
Grade 4. Her best subject is the language Kannada. Her favourite activities are drawing and playing the traditional
game Kho-Kho. She is responsible for helping her mother at
home and wants to be a police officer when she grows up.
This year Pope Francis called for the Extraordinary Jubilee
Year of Mercy. In his calling, he asked us to “rediscover these
corporal works of mercy: to feed the hungry, give drink to the
thirsty, clothe the naked, welcome the stranger, heal the sick,
visit the imprisoned, and bury the dead.” Cardinal Ambrozic
is proud to answer the calling of Pope Francis through the
sponsorship of Anthika and we look forward to a growing relationship with her.

On Saturday February 27th members of Cardinal Ambrozic’s Varsity Dance
Teams were asked to perform at a Toronto Marlies hockey game. The Toronto Marlies are the AHL affiliate team to the Toronto Maple Leafs and
play their home games at Ricoh Colosseum in Toronto. The cross section of
dancers who performed were from CA’s Bhangra, Hip Hop, Jazz, Latin and
Tap teams.
CA’s varsity dancers performed after the first intermission of the hockey
game for a crowd of over six thousand people. They adapted well to their
given dance space and performed with professionalism and passion.

Ambrozic Girls’ Soccer Team Undefeated in Two Tournaments
The varsity girls’ soccer team competed in two tournaments at the Ontario Soccer Cent in Woodbridge on February 26 and March 10, 2016. The girls played skillfully and were undefeated over the
two days. It was evident that our goalie Vanessa F. was the best keeper in both tournaments as she
did not let in a single goal! The girls proved to be defensively sound and worked well as a team.
Grade 9s Jessica K. and Meghan F. have found steady spots on defense having played all of the
games in full. The girls also shared the goal scoring as Marianne D., Kenya S., Julia C., and Jacklyn B.
all found the back of the net. Due to their success, the team earned births into two Tournaments of
Champions on April 4 and April 8. Coaches Lindsay, Raso, Toto and community coach Nicholas Fiore
are very proud of the girls and look forward to continued success in the next tournaments and
throughout the upcoming season. Go River Hawks!

On Friday, February 19, the boys’ hockey team
traveled to York University’s Canlan Hockey Tournament for a shot at redemption. Finalists a year
ago, the boys set their eyes on the championship.
Your Riverhawks came out strongly, skating to a 40 win in their first game. The team then grinded
out a 2-2 tie in their second game, setting up a
must win match up for their final round robin
game. Unfortunately, the boys came up short of
their goal, and missed out on the finals by losing
the tie breaker. The coaching staff is very proud
of the way the boys carried themselves at all
times, maintaining discipline, and exhibiting
sportsmanship and work ethic…that’s the Riverhawk way.
Team members include: Goalies: Daniel K. and Andrew C.; D.: Michael S., Alex R., Abel ., Daunte
N., Anraj S.; Forwards: Trevor M., Rohan S., Jacob H., Humza C., Manraj S., Anthony S., Nigel D Cristian T., Jaskaran D.; Manager: Brandon G.

Principal’s Reflection
On Thursday, March 10th our school community came together in a tremendous celebration of culture, music and
food. As has been established over the last number of
years, CaraCardinal continues to be a signature event for
our school and certainly one of the highlights of the
year. All those who call this place home know that Cardinal Ambrozic Catholic Secondary School is indeed a very
special place. Like any other special community, what
makes this place special is its people. And it was the people of this community that made CaraCardinal such a tremendous success. From the students who organized and
ran the performances and the pavilions, to the staff advisors who supported and guided the students, to the hundreds of attendees…staff, students, family members,
neighbours and friends…everyone came together to
share their culture and to celebrate the culture of others. In the days and weeks following, an undeniably upbeat, heart-warming vibe has permeated the hallways and classrooms of the school. This feeling, one of respecting and caring for one
another, not only puts smiles on the faces of everyone who walks our halls on a daily basis, but it
goes far beyond that. This school spirit continues to have a very positive influence on student
behaviour and most importantly, student achievement. Now that CaraCardinal is behind us for
one more year, let us begin the countdown to CaraCardinal 2017 by continuing to nurture our
passionate and respectful multicultural environment. We surely have lightening in a bottle
here…let us never take it for granted.

On February 26th, MADD Canda gave a presentation to our grade 12 students. They screened a
movie entitled, “24 hours” that followed a group of teenagers and examined their decision making skills. We were thankful to have Neil from MADD Canada share the important message
against impaired driving. Grade 12 students will also receive an information package to keep
with them.
Four main points were learned from MADD’s presentation.
1. Promise to never take the risk to drink and drive.
2. Keep safe as a passenger.
3. Make a plan to keep yourself safe.
4. Step up and make a difference--take care of each other

My name is Jai A., and my placement is at Bolton GM. At first I was nervous because I did not know anybody who
worked there, but after a week that nervous feeling went away. The people I work with are friendly, have the same
interests as me and the same goals. I learned so much on the first day. I enjoy working on cars, it is something I love to
do. It is a great feeling when you work on a car and watch it drive away after being fixed, it gives you a great sense
of satisfaction. I have only been there a while but I look forward to spending more time at my co-op placement. For
anyone thinking about co-op it is definitely a great idea and you can learn so much from this amazing experience.

The Art Department has been collaborating with many departments this semester: Fashion, Black History Club, Chaplaincy, and
Social Science.
Congratulations to Leanne S., Vinayak B., Adam H. and Mrs. Raso for organizing the stunning, senior level artworks for the fashion show. Our cafeteria was transformed into a creative space which highlighted the efforts of our most talented Ambrozic
students.
Under the leadership of Mr. Delgado and myself, the combined Ancient History class and Grade 10 Visual Arts students, created
prehistoric cave, inspired art.
Through the discipline of drawing, our students created visual narratives, loaded with meaningful, modern symbols while using
the design elements of line, shape and colour. On a large scale, our students worked together standing up and drew on walls
and easels. The mediums used were graphite, charcoal, ochre coloured pastels. We all laughed and were excited by all the
creative energy that emerged. Well done, Riverhawks!
Our grade 12 students journeyed into post-secondary studies by attending grueling art interviews at OCAD and York/Sheridan
Universities. We wish them great success in their future careers.
Congratulations to Liane W. for her acceptance at the U of Waterloo for Urban Design Studies. Leanne S. was accepted for Fashion Studies at Ryerson University and
Vinayak B. for the York Sheridan Elite Design Program. We are so proud of you!
Thank you to all staff and students for all your positive feedback on the artwork showcased around the school. I am so proud to be your art teacher!

Predicating vs. hypothesizing. Using controls.
Identifying variables. Measuring and recording.
Analyzing errors. Evaluating results. These are
some of the 30+ skills students need to learn in
order to “think like a scientist”. A scientist asks
questions, develops fair tests and needs to interpret the results. Labs
are to mirror this process. If you ask most
people who graduated from high school
over 20 years ago to
recall their science labs
most would give you
similar answers: Everyone turned to the same
page of the textbook
(and probably copied
out the procedure on
their own sheet), followed the same set of
instructions, and got the same results. Their results proved what the teacher had said a few
days ago about the concept (e.g. density, the
shape of a cell, the rate of a reaction, the velocity of an object). These types of labs are
known as “recipe labs” and are valid learning
experiences but do not necessarily mirror the
skills needed to “think like a scientist”. Similar to
working on an assembly line, students are not
required to question or design any components, but to follow the instructions. The emphasis is on the product of the activity. In our
current world, this is not a relevant set of skills.
Fast-forward to present day. Students are presented with a problem they are to solve. For example, how can you identify this unknown substance using this set of equipment? Students
develop their own unique procedure and will
have varying results. These types of activities
are known as “inquiry labs”, where the emphasis is on the process. Students are encouraged
to problem solve, trouble-shoot, and communicate their results. In other words, they are to
“think like a scientist”. These are the skills which
students will use once they graduate high
school.
On February 18, Science teachers spent the
day at a “Smarter Science” workshop, learning
how to implement
and
increase
the
number of inquiry skills
and labs in our classes. Teachers came
away with terrific ideas for developing a
progression of skills,
strategies for implementing scientific investigations and linking the skills to current
world issues.
Inquiry based activities require students
to be actively engaged in their own learning.
Students collaborate in class together, but are
responsible for their own learning. Where traditionally a lab report would be handed in after
a “recipe lab”, this type of assessment is not
valid for an “inquiry lab”. In-class individual assessments, “RERUNS”, lab quizzes, interviews,
concept maps, and graphs are some of the
various tools which teachers use to determine
the level of expertise for a targeted set of skills
for that particular lab.
The set of skills we hope to develop in teaching
students to “think like a scientist,” (problem
solving, analyzing, communicating, collaborating, etc.) transcend the science classroom and
are useful in other fields of study, as well as in
everyday life. As such, it is our hope that students will be better prepared to succeed in our
complex, fast-paced, and ever-changing
world.

Cardinal Ambrozic’s Sport SHSM program presented a wonderful opportunity for its students to travel to Ottawa, at the beginning of March. Our students were exposed to some of the ins
and outs of business, as it relates to sports, through a Sport and
Business Conference hosted by The Ottawa Senators Sport and
Entertainment, and this was coupled with a chance to watch
the Senators in action against the St. Louis Blues. The SHSM program is a great way for students to receive experiential learning opportunities, specific to the area of sports. Not only did
the SHSM students attend an NHL game and gain some sports
and business knowledge, but they also had the opportunity
to tour aspects of Carleton University, including its new sport
facilities; as well as visit Parliament Hill. Overall, this trip was a
great and memorable experience for our CA students!

It has been a busy and exciting start to second semester
in the English Department. English teachers are tirelessly
working on improving and developing course curriculum
in all grades and levels to help serve our student community. There has been a particular focus on supporting
the 21st century learner by implementing effective
teaching strategies and technology in the classroom.
The English Department also bid adieu to the talented
and hardworking Ms. Cudzilo. The English department
was lucky enough to have Ms. Cudzilo for nearly two
years. She quickly became an integral part of the department and supported students with intelligence and
compassion. As we said goodbye to Ms. Cudzilo we
happily welcomed back the accomplished Ms. Kajda
who has returned from her maternity leave.
The English Department has also planned two exciting
theatre trips this semester. On April 27th, grade 11 students will have the opportunity to see a live production
of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, a visceral story that details
the effects of greed and ambition. Also, on May 12th
grade 9 students will see a theatre production of the
timeless story of forbidden love in Shakespeare’s Romeo
and Juliet.
Students and English teachers thoroughly prepared for
the OSSLT which took place on March 31st. Parents are
encouraged to continue supporting their children by encouraging healthy reading habits at home.
Grade 9 students from Ms. Andreopoulos’ class experimented with new forms of technology to present material
to their peers. Critical thinking and collaborative skills
were practiced by these students, pictured above, and
their classmates.

On the 18th of February, students from Cardinal Ambrozic Secondary School and students from St. Augustine Secondary School attended a joint field trip to Gage Park skating rink in Brampton. Gage Park was founded in the year 1903.
It is the oldest municipal Park in Brampton.
Many students were excited, as it was their first time skating. Students who attended this trip said, ‘’This is a very hard
activity which comprises strength and stamina, but at the same time, it’s very fun and lively’’.
After the fun event, we were allowed to walk around the beautiful downtown Brampton area. Some students even
went into the Peel Art museum and we saw a lot of fascinating art and a lot of historical artifacts.
