DIRT BIKE – USA
Analyzing the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)
of Dirt Bikes’ Hardware and Software Assets
Software requirements:
1. Spreadsheet software
2. Web browser software
3. Electronic presentation software
Questions:
Dirt Bikes would like to replace the desktop computer systems for its corporate
administrative staff, consisting of the controller, accountant, administrative assistant, two
human resources specialists, and three secretaries. Using the Internet, obtain pricing
information for 8 PC desktop systems (monitor, computer, and keyboard) manufactured
by IBM, Dell, or Compaq. The desktop PCs should come with Windows XP
Professional pre-installed and should have a minimum of 2 GHz processor speed, 80 GB
hard drive, 256 MB of RAM, a CD-RW drive, and a 17 inch monitor. You should also
obtain pricing on 3 monochrome laser printers manufactured by Hewlett Packard or
another vendor with minimum printing speed of 10 pages per minute and 600 x 600 dpi
print quality and 1 color laser printer from HP or another vendor that can print more
slowly but has a minimum 600 x 600 dpi print quality. Then obtain comparative pricing
information on 8 copies of Microsoft Office XP and Lotus SmartSuite, making sure the
software suites you are pricing include word processing, spreadsheet, database, electronic
presentation and e-mail software tools. (The desktop productivity software can be
purchased installed on the computers or as a separate software package.)
1. Prepare a spreadsheet showing the research results for your desktop systems and
identify the lowest-price system that meets your requirements.
2. You have learned that hardware and software purchase costs only represent part
of the total cost of ownership (TCO) of technology assets and that there are
additional cost components to consider. For this particular hardware and software
system, assume that one-time installation represents 10% of initial hardware and
software purchase costs, one-time training will cost 10% of initial purchase costs,
annual technical support will cost 30% of initial purchase costs, and annual
downtime, another 15% of purchase costs. What is the total cost of ownership of
Dirt Bikes’ new desktop systems over a three-year period?
3. use electronic presentation software to summarize your findings for management.
