ARE YOU MISSING CREDITS
TO COMPLETE YOUR HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA?
What is PLAR for Mature Students?
Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) is the formal evaluation and credit – granting
process whereby adult learners may obtain credits for prior learning. Prior learning includes the
knowledge and skills that learners have acquired, in both formal and informal ways, outside secondary
school. Learners may have their knowledge and skills evaluated against the expectations outlined in
provincial curriculum documents in order to earn credits towards the secondary school diploma. PLAR
for Mature Students focuses on what adults/learners know and can do. A learner could be granted up
to 26 of the 30 credits needed for an OSSD through the PLAR for Mature Students process. The last
4 grade 11 or 12 credits cannot be granted. They must be earned through formal education. At Brian
J. Fleming Catholic Adult Learning Centre and St. Gabriel Adult learning Centre, these credits can be
earned through eLearning, day programs, night school or summer school.
You qualify for Maturity credits: Learning and Experience
outside the classroom
IF YOU…
• Are 18 years of age or older, have less than 26 credits and have been out of Secondary School for at
least one year. Following Ministry of Education policy, we can acknowledge that while you have been
out of school, you may have gained knowledge or skills from the workplace, life experiences or other
training and may be eligible for additional credit.
IF YOU…
• Entered an Ontario Secondary School before September 1999, and are following the requirements for
the OSSD (1984-1999) or the SSGD (prior to 1984).
IF YOU…
• Are new to the Ontario Secondary School System as of February 1, 2004 who are working towards
the OSSD under OSS or OS diploma requirements.
To learn if you are eligible for the PLAR for Mature Students Program, please book a counselling
appointment. A $30 fee will apply.
