ART III - Summer Landscape – Summer Assignment NAME:_________________ LESSON FOCUS: This lesson focuses on drawing a landscape from direct observation using color medium of your choice. VOCABULARY: Color: An element of art derived from reflective light. The sensation of color is aroused in the brain by response of different wavelengths of light. Color has three properties: hue, value, and intensity. Landscape: a work of art that shows the features of the natural environment (trees, lakes, mountains, etc.). Horizon line: the division between earth and sky, as seen by an observer. Foreground: part of the picture plane that appears closest to the viewer. The foreground is usually at the bottom of the picture. Medium: A material used by an artist to produce a work of art. Middle ground: area in a picture between the foreground and the background. Background: part of the picture plane that seems to be farthest from the viewer. Perspective: method used to create the illusion of depth on a two-dimensional surface. It was developed during the Renaissance by architect Filippo Brunelleschi. Perspective is created by overlapping, size variations, placement, detail, color, and converging lines. PROCEDURE: Find a location outside that appeals to you visually (park, backyard, etc.) Bring your sketchbook and a camera (if you own one) Do several sketches Choose your strongest composition and enlarge onto 16”x 20” paper If possible, and if the weather permits, finish outside looking at your subject Finish using a color medium of your choice. Remember, it may take several layers of pastel before a final surface is realized.
