DRAWING (2) – OIL PASTEL LANDSCAPE NAME:_______________________ LESSON FOCUS: This lesson focuses on creating a contour line landscape drawing in oil pastel. VOCABULARY: Background: Area of the picture that appears farthest from the viewer. Color: An element of design with three properties, hue, value and intensity. Also the character of surfaces created by the response of vision to wavelengths of reflected light. Contour drawing: A drawing in which contour lines alone are used to represent subject matter. Contour line: A line or lines that surround and define the edges of an object or figures. Foreground: Area of a picture that appears closest to the viewer. Landscape: Painting or drawing in which natural land scenery, such as mountains, trees, rivers, or lakes, is the main feature. Middle ground: Area in a picture between the foreground and the background. Perspective: A method for representing three-dimensional objects on a two-dimensional surface. Texture: The element of art that refers to the way things feel, or look as if they might feel if touched. PROCEDURE: Look at pictures of landscapes for inspiration and/or reference. Simplify your shapes and create a contour line drawing of your landscape forms being sure to include a foreground, middle ground, and background. Once you have a balanced composition, trace your landscape onto good paper. Using a variety of bright colors, fill in the shapes of your landscape. Once finished, use a black oil pastel to outline all of your landscape forms.
