Welcome, CHALLENGER!
When you have finished your regular assignments, you are eligible to go on a special mission!
Please select one activity below that interests you and begin your exploration. Remember that your work should be neat so that others may read it, and should be an application of your best skills and talents. Spelling, grammar, and effort count!
If you complete one assignment, you are welcome to select another. Your work will be shared/displayed for the rest of the class to see.
Good luck on your quest!
Social Studies Mission #1 : We skipped over the Overview of our textbook, which included information about our country and our government.
Select one or more of the following projects to be used as a learning center or online resource for our class:
Create a poster or project that teaches about the three branches of our government. Be sure to make it colorful, neat, and kid-friendly
(do not copy and paste website information – put it into your own words).
Research a well-known American symbol (Statue of Liberty, Liberty Bell, Lincoln
Memorial, etc.). In addition to pictures, provide 3-7 interesting facts about it.
Our country is well known for the opportunities for people to start businesses, become famous, or invent things. This is known as Free Enterprise. Write a report on a famous
American who is an example of successful Free Enterprise (Thomas Edison, Madam
C.J. Walker, Bill Gates, etc.)
Social Studies Mission #2: Create a thorough report on one of the tribes we learned about in
Chapter 1. Cite at least one library book and one website used to gather information.
Include colorful images or artwork to support your presentation. Prepare a five minute presentation to share this information with the class.
Science Mission #1: Research the early inventors of the microscope, Anton von
Leeuwenhoek and Robert Hooke. Share your findings in a short essay or a brief
Power Point presentation. Remember to provide information about the sources you used for your research, and to put all writing in y our own kid-friendly words.
Science Mission #2: Use a magnifier to make discoveries about something we see and use almost every day – money! Look closely at a
$1, $5, and $10 bill. What things do you find when the bills are magnified that you never noticed before? Submit your detailed findings in writing.
Reading / Writing Mission : In addition to the activity ideas in our anthology, the following options are available to earn Challenger credit for Language Arts:
Publish a Book Bug story (for the library). Contact Mrs. Buzzard for more information.
Write a detailed summary of a story/book using the firstperson point of view (as though you were a character from the story retelling the important events/details).
Write a letter to a favorite author or illustrator. You need to find the contact information so we can mail it!
Write a classroom newsletter about what we’re learning / working on in class. Add plenty of details and some colorful artwork. I might copy it and send it home for all families to read!
Create a brochure for new students to Gwynedd Square. What do they need to know? Add plenty of details and some colorful artwork. Publisher is a great tool to make an attractive and informative brochure. I will give stellar examples to Mr. Bowen and Mrs. Vaszily to use when new students arrive at our school!
