“WHERE THE PUCK IS GOING” SURVEY RESULTS
At the March 30, 2015 annual XUGPHSA alumni dinner at CINTAS, keynote speaker Rev. Michael Graham, SJ, Xavier’s president,
was asked to share about the future of health programs at the university. Using the Wayne Gretzky secret-of-hockey-success
motto, “I don’t skate to where the puck is—I skate to where the puck is going”, Fr. Graham noted that Xavier visionaries in the
mid-1950’s did that very thing by predicting the coming need for trained hospital administrators and by establishing our Graduate
Program in Hospital Administration in 1958.
Now, 57 years later, Fr. Graham exhorted us as healthcare leaders to once again “skate to where the puck is going” and assist
Xavier in determining the next health programs to offer that will meet the healthcare needs in society.
A brief survey was the first step to begin defining “where the puck is going”. The survey went to a broad group of
experts: XUGPHSA alumni, residency preceptors, HSA Advisory Board members, HSA faculty, internship preceptors, and students.
The content results are summarized here:

Given the trends you listed above, before we consider new health program(s) at Xavier and to avoid duplication or saturation,
which of these needs are already being meet by other universities in the Cincinnati area?
Xavier University currently offers the following health programs:
a) Health Services Administration (MHSA and BSHSA)
b) Nursing (DNP, MSN, FNP, BSN)
c) Occupational Therapy (MOT becoming OTD)
d) Radiologic Technology (AS)
e) Social Work (BSW)
By Xavier not having a medical school or a hospital, this is actually an advantage for the clinical and field placements
for our students. Xavier is not considering a medical school.

Commentary:
Xavier’s new program this fall, MS-HECOR (Health Economic and Clinical Outcomes Research) is part of our department of Health
Services Administration as there is a natural fit with MHSA and BSHSA. HECOR is coming along at just the right time for impact
within the healthcare scene around us, as evidenced by the survey results above. Consider the wisdom offered regarding data,
data analysis, and data management in the above results.
Not only do we have the new HECOR program just getting underway but also do we have increased opportunities within our
MHSA and BSHSA courses for data and analytical experience. The BSHSA program has two tracks—information technology and
long-term care. Various MHSA courses are weaving in more opportunities for the use of data sets, data analysis, and decisionmaking based on that analysis. A new option for LEAN belt certification by MHSA students is in process and will be rolled out
during this academic year.
We thank all who participated in this survey. Your sharing enlightened us and also validated the approaches we have underway.
ALUM-N-I-C-E Our 1,587 Graduate MHSA Alumni and 37 Undergraduate BSHSA Alumni are the pride and joy of Xavier and our
HSA Department. We applaud your achievements and commitment to the highest quests in health services administration, we
hold you up as models for our students to emulate, and we happily claim you as “ours”.
