Name :____________________________________ Date:______________________ Congratulations! It’s your turn to answer the question, “What am I learning today and why do I need to know this?” Your task is to pick a topic that is new to you. Perhaps it’s something you are interested in but do not know a lot about. Those make the best lessons! Next do some research on the topic so that you can teach yourself more about it. Once you feel like you are an expert on this topic, now it is time to share your new found knowledge. You are going to plan a lesson (the same way real teachers do) to teach your fellow students more about the topic you chose. Steps: 1. Brainstorm a list of topics of interest. Narrow the choices to something specific. For example: You choose Astronomy as your topic. However there is too much to know about Astronomy, so you narrow the topic to stars. But there are billions of stars and things to know about them. So you narrow the topic of stars to constellations and further narrow it to constellations in the summer sky that can be seen from Pennsylvania. Now that’s a good topic! 2. Research the topic by thinking of questions you have about it. How many constellations are in the sky? How did they get their names? What are their names? Are there tricks to finding them in the night sky? 3. Once you feel you are an expert on your topic, begin the steps below to plan your lesson. LESSON PLAN FORMAT Length of time for lesson: How long will lesson take from beginning to end? I. Purpose of Lesson / Objective: The purpose of this lesson is the reason for teaching the lesson: to introduce, to give information, to help organize information, to demonstrate knowledge, to provide enrichment or a chance for creative application. Write a behavioral objective and criteria for mastery / understanding. What will the student be able to do after your lesson and how will you know they can do it? Try using Bloom’s Taxonomy of Educational Objectives. II. Preparation Materials: List materials teacher will need to teach lesson and list materials students will need to participate in the lesson. III. Procedure 1. Outline and label steps in the lesson You will outline each step you will be using to develop the lesson. Under each step indent and list the KEY questions, directions, or content you need to present. Write the actual question when possible but remember you are not writing a script. Step 1: Anticipatory Set: You are motivating your students to want to learn this material. Link the material to students’ background knowledge and experience. Begin with a question that sparks interest in the topic. Create a puzzle or use an analogy to get students thinking along the lines you want to go. Share the relevance of the lesson to students’ lives. Show a video clip that gets them excited about the topic. Overtly link your anticipatory set to the body of the lesson. It should introduce topic/idea and include discussion and a visual aid. Step 2: State the Objective: Explaining to students what they will be able to do or know by the end of this lesson. You are presenting new information to students; modeling where appropriate is one form of instruction. Asking and answering questions and demonstrating examples. Step 3: Instruction: How will you communicate to the students--tell, lecture, stand up and deliver so that the student will understand the objective. How will you show/demonstrate the skill or competence so the student will also be able to do it? This is the part of the lesson where you are actively teaching new information. Step 4: Checking Understanding: Determining whether or not students are making sense of the material as the material is being presented. Give examples and then ask students to model processes and/or demonstrate steps. Ask questions at varied levels to help you monitor students’ growth and to adjust for problems during the lesson. Step 5: Guided Practice: Immediately after instruction students are given the opportunity to apply or practice what they have just learned and receive immediate feedback. An example of this could be a quick review game or a journal question. (How are checking understanding and guided practice different? Checking understanding occurs in the process of instruction. Guided practice takes place just after instruction has occurred. Checking for understanding is often a whole-class process by observing body language or asking a simple question to the whole class. Guided practice may be done individually. Both involve quickly assessing whether students understand what has just been presented. ) Step 7: Independent Practice / Assessment: After students appear to understand the new material they are given the opportunity to further apply or practice using the new information. This can be in a small group or independent. This step makes learning more permanent. This can be a project, a test, a quiz, etc. Step 8: Closure: The closure is an opportunity to insure students have learned the main idea of the lesson. The closure should be drawn from them. Ask them questions, ask them to summarize steps, to do another example, to apply information in a new situation or draw conclusions. Self Evaluation: How will you evaluate the lesson in addition to student achievement specified in your objective? You will complete this evaluation after the lesson has been taught. It is a time for you to reflect on the lesson. Answer the following questions. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. What were the strengths of the lesson? What worked well? What were problem areas? How could you improve the lesson? What could you do differently if you were to teach it again? What is an alternate way to present the same material?
