Mustang Corral begins September 2, 2014!
Welcome back to school! As you know, we have some new changes in our Mustang Corral 21st
Century program. Our Mustang Corral and afterschool childcare programs have combined. We
have already started to fill the needs of parents who need care between the time school is out up to
5:30 in the afternoon. It is proceeding like our old childcare system always has and includes a
snack, homework time, plus time in the gym, computer lab and everyone’s favorite – the playground!
Our regular Mustang Corral classes that the students know and love will begin Tuesday, September
2nd. We will once again provide the students at Red Cross Elementary an abundance of
opportunities to learn, develop, and explore through various classes. Our teachers have seen a real
difference in the students’ performance because of the academic sessions. The students
participating are happy to not only get their homework completed before going home, but also to
have help from teachers familiar with their classes and assignments.
The Mustang Corral classes will once again be held Monday – Thursday afternoons. We will
have Fun Friday each Friday (and any day that our regular teachers cannot participate in classes) so
that the students will always have a safe place to stay. All students will come to the cafeteria when
school is dismissed and the children will receive a nutritious snack. They will then move into a
classroom for the first afternoon session focused on helping each student achieve greater academic
success with Homework Help at 3:00. Reading will be the focus on Mondays and Wednesdays, and
math on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Each class will have two adults ready for additional tutoring
when needed, including a certified staff member. The second afternoon session of Mustang Corral
will include fun classes for the students! They include favorites from the past, plus the addition of
archery!
Our Preschool and Kindergarten students will be grouped together throughout the afternoon
to serve them better. They will start their day with a snack, continue on to their academic class then
their second hour will be spent doing four different activities each week. Our plan is to have Arts &
Crafts Monday, Board Game Tuesday, Wii Wednesday, and Technology Time Thursday. They will be
on their own schedule and include other physical activities during their afternoon as well.
The fees have changed as well and will be as follows:
$25 per week for those that pay the full lunch price
$15 per week for those that pay a reduced lunch price
$5 per week for those that are provided with free lunch
Siblings will be provided with a $5 discount per week if paying full lunch price
If you prefer to pay on a daily basis instead of weekly, the fees will be as follows:
$6 per day for those that pay the full lunch price
$3 per day for those that pay the reduced lunch price
$1 per day for those that are provided with free lunch
If your child will be paying less than the full rate, please complete a scholarship form which
will be available at the front desk and online on our page under the school’s website. Our pick-up
system has been moved to the front car line and will last from 5:00 to 5:30. Our latest pick-up time is
5:30 daily and parents that are late will be expected to pay $1 per minute after that time. Bills will be
distributed to parents on a bi-monthly basis. The extremely low cost is due to our grant from the
21st Century Community Learning Center program.
Even if your child has participated in the past, we need a new registration form filled out each
semester. Please read the information carefully and make the best class choice decisions for your
child and return the form as soon as possible as some classes will be filled on a first come, first
served basis. Classes will begin Tuesday, September 2nd. Please complete the attached
enrollment form and return it by this Friday, August 22nd. Please pay close attention to the age
limits certain classes may have. Please note that if classes do not have enough participation, we
may have to discontinue a class and will go with your student’s next choice. It is very important that
you provide your child's 2nd choice for the best selection. If you have any questions or need more

Mustang Corral Class Descriptions Fall 2014
The Green Team
Days: Monday—Thursday, 1st hour only
Ages—5th & 6th Graders (limited number)
The Green Team leads Red Cross Elementary’s green initiative by dividing up and performing several tasks throughout the school
daily. They collect and recycle paper, plastic, and cans from our classrooms and work areas. They monitor classrooms daily to
make sure all electronic devices are turned off each night. Students also research and tweet green tips each day. You may follow
us at RCEGreenTeam. We will begin collecting Coke tabs for the Coke Rewards program soon to earn prizes for our school!
Green Team members are an important part of the Energy Committee and helped our school to be recognized as an Energy Star
recipient.
Lego Robotics
Days: Mondays and Wednesdays
Ages: All
Designed for the elementary learner, WeDo Robotics is a cross-curricular set and series of theme-based activities. With WeDo
Legos, primary students can build animals, soccer players and more, and then add movement with fun drag-and-drop software
using computers. Instructors are ready to help your child build all the creations with the kids that they can imagine as they
investigate engineering together! The Lego Mindstorms Robotics program helps bring the fun of robotics into classrooms! With
Lego Mindstorms, you convert any classroom into a hands-on robotics laboratory! Your students will model real-life mechanisms
and use creativity, logic, and problem-solving skills while learning key STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)
concepts. Students of all ages should have fun in this class! They will be limited only by their imaginations with their creations!
Performing Arts
Days: Mondays and Wednesdays
Ages: Primary and Intermediate
Our Performing Arts class will be a class that combines art for all ages while creating, producing, and performing a play which will
showcase the primary students in our school. If your child is creative and would like to paint and build the backdrop, help create
costumes and perform for a crowd, this is their class! The Intermediate students will help out behind the scenes for the
performance as the Primary students take the stage for a holiday production in early December!
GenMove
Days: Mondays and Wednesdays
Ages: 1st – 6th grades
GenMove is a fitness class for Mustang Corral that gets kids moving and having a good time! It has activities that are
fun, engaging, and proven to increase movement in children while participating in games! It will help give children the
tools to live healthy and active lives! Their motto is Be Active, Learn, and Have Fun!!
Creative Cooking
Days: Mondays and Wednesdays
Tuesdays and Thursdays
Ages: Primary and Intermediate (limited number)
We’ll be cooking up some fun in this class! The students will learn how to make simple and delicious recipes! Each day we’ll make
something good and learn about nutrition along the way. We’ll also incorporate books into our cooking class for some extra fun!
We will send recipes home with the kids so they can recreate the dishes for you! Students may not take this class both days.
Archery
Days: Monday & Wednesdays
Tuesdays & Thursdays
Ages: 4th – 6th grades (limited number)
Welcome to Archery! Beginner archery class is a fun and interactive way to discover archery for the first time! Class, you’ll learn
archery safety, form, and scoring. This is a perfect opportunity for 4th, 5th and 6th grade students to learn the skills of working
with a bow and arrow in a safe, controlled environment. The program will provide a secure environment to ensure the safety of all
participants. Everything you need to participate in this program will be provided for you. All you need to do is show up and have
fun! All of our instructors have taken the Basic Archery Training offered by NASP to ensure quality instruction and safety for all
participants. This class will develop micro and macro motor ability, plus listening and observation skills.
Sewing Dynasty
Days: Tuesdays and Thursdays
Ages: 3rd– 6th (limited number)
Students will learn the basics of crochet, loom knitting and embroidery in this class taught by Stephanie Lancaster, a Certified
Master Clothing Teacher and the leader of this 4-H Club. Students choose their projects and work at their own pace. These
projects may be entered into the Barren County Fair as a 4-H project in the summer. Last year students made scarves, wall
hangings, and hats. The purchase of yarn may be required depending on the project chosen. Sewing tools will be provided.
Other projects may be offered based on the interest and skill level of the students. To help offset the cost of the supplies, students
make rubber band bracelets or other sewing projects to sell. Mrs. Lancaster is seeking experienced students to act as leaders in
the class to help with the beginners!
Games Galore
Days: Tuesdays and Thursdays
Ages: 1st – 6th grades (limited number)
This class will be rotating to different games throughout the afternoon to keep everyone busy! While some are playing Wii
games, other will be busy playing board games! Students will enjoy an hour of fun playing an assortment of games!
STLP (Student Technology Leadership Program)
Days: Tuesdays and Thursdays
Ages: 2nd – 6th grades
The Student Technology Leadership Program is a project-based learning program that empowers students to use technology and
computers to learn and achieve. Students in grades 2-6 can gain leadership skills by participating in projects, creating products
and providing services which meet the STLP Mission and Goals. Students will be assisted in developing their computer skills plus
helping to clean and take care of the computers throughout the school. Students will have the opportunity to participate in the
district and regional STLP competition for the school year!
Drama 101
Days: Tuesdays and Thursdays
Ages: 4th – 6th grades
Lights, Camera, Action! Once again drama will be offered to our intermediate Mustang Corral students. Elements of drama will
be introduced including costumes, set design, make-up and much more. Students will showcase their talent through the
opportunity to be active participants in a holiday production for family and friends at the end of the semester. The class will
include singing, dancing, acting, and most of all fun! If you are not an actor or actress, we still have a spot for you behind the
scenes with props, set design, set up and much more.
