KEY indicators (For schools progress on unit planning; other program role or plans to
support SB1 implementation): As the data indicates, we had significant increases in the
percent of proficient and distinguished scores in the content areas of math, science, and social
studies with smaller gains in the areas of reading and writing. We met annual yearly progress for
NCLB in both reading and math. This is impressive considering the enormous increase we
needed to make in math to meet NCLB requirements. We believe our focus on answering openresponse questions and our ESS day-time waiver for math were the main reasons for the increase
in student achievement. In addition, we believe our staff changes in the English department
throughout last year caused the smaller improvement in reading and writing.
Important Activities/Accomplishments: Since testing at the high school level has been
changed completely, our focus this year will be on the following:
1. Implement ACT Quality Core in Algebra Ii, Biology, English II, and U.S. History. Our
goal this year to is have 70% of our students pass the end-of-course assessments in each
area.
2. Continue to development standards-based unit plans in all content areas.
3. Continue to use Thoughtful Education tools and strategies to improve instruction and
learning.
4. Use formative assessments to drive instruction and increase student achievement.
5. Increase knowledge of Characteristics of Highly Effective Teaching and Learning
(CHETL) and conduct learning walks during the fall and spring semesters.
6. Continue to use KAPLAN materials to prepare students for the ACT. Students will also
meet with a former professor, Dr. Weatherly for some ACT prep. We will also give ACT
practice tests.
7. Continue to give PLAN practice test to 9th graders in the spring. Analyze and review data
with each 10th grader in the fall of 2011.
8. Mrs. Edging and Mrs. Angel will meet with students to set goals for ACT and on EOC
exams.
9. Continue ESS Day-time waiver pull-out program for math and explore the option of
doing this for reading/English as well.
10. Investigate changes to on-demand writing test. Incorporate that information into
classroom instruction in order to improve on-demand writing scores.
Our FFA soil-judging team recently placed 2nd in regional competition and will be competing at
the state level in November. Mr. Hargrove was also recently awarded a $750 Local Program
Success Alumni Grant to purchase more welding equipment for the Ag department.
Middle school: CCMS continues to focus on rigorous instruction. Our PLCs (Professional
Learning Clubs) meet twice a month. During those meetings, we discuss the instructional units
and continue to work through the CASL book. We are also focusing on the two CHETL
characteristics that the district has chosen for this year, Learning Climate and Classroom
Assessment and Reflection.
Our PLCs and Teacher work days focus primarily on the implementation of Senate Bill. Our
time is spent creating and revising units and discussing the implementation of Thoughtful Ed
strategies and formative assessments.
We have three teams overseeing the three separate Program Reviews for Practical Living/Career
Studies, Arts/Humanities, and Writing. The teams have met and developed a plan to collect data.
The teams will meet again this month. All of the CCMS teachers are aware of the expectation
that we are all responsible for the Program Reviews. There is a central location on the server for
documentation.
In mathematics, Ms. Mathis and Ms. Sullivan are working diligently to close the gaps left by the
old standards as well as implementing the new standards.
The CCMS faculty also continues to incorporate the principles of Capturing Kid’s Hearts into
their classrooms.
We are very excited to have made AYP (Annual Yearly Progress). Our test scores show promise
that we are headed in the right direction. Overall we have increased Proficient/Distinguished
scores by 9.56 in Reading, 19.83 in Math, 25.49 in Science, 9.21 in Social Studies, and 11.67 in
On Demand.
Elementary: On Monday, October 9, 2011, a teacher planning day was held to disaggregate
2010-2011 testing data. CCES did not meet NCLB requirements in reading or math. Therefore,
CCES teachers will continue to develop units of instruction to implement the new standards in
reading and math. To help meet the needs in math, we will be changing the focus of the math and
science lab. Therefore, it is now strictly a math lab for both 4th and 5th grade students. Currently
we are using the lab to work on addressing the gaps between the old and new math standards.
Also, CCES has once again received a daytime waiver to use the ESS position to serve students
during the school day. Since we have both math intervention and reading intervention grant
programs in the primary, we will use ESS to provide remediation/intervention in reading and
math for 4th and 5th grade students. In addition, teachers will be using formative assessment
results to drive instruction. Examples and summaries of formative assessment results will be
documented in teachers’ data notebooks.
The 4th and 5th Graders are scheduled to leave on their trip to Washington D.C. this Saturday,
October 15. Parent/Teacher Conferences will be held Tuesday, October 18 from 3:00 to 6:00.
Trips were approved to the national Conventions for both FBLA (Nov. 3- 6) and FFA (Oct. 19-21). The
board revised BG1 for the lighting project and approved a capital funds request that will cover the cost
of the project. This is to improve the energy efficiency of the lights including the middle and high school
gyms. A bus purchase was approved using the KISTA bond program to fund it.
Compensating tax rates were approved. The compensating is set to raise the same funds for the school
district as the prior year. The rate real estate is 49.2 cents per $100 assessed value and 49.4 cents for
personal property. The motor vehicle rate of 47.8 cents and 3% for utilities remains unchanged.
A look back at the October 7, 1960 meeting of the Carlisle County School Board: D.J. Mitchell, principal
of CCHS, was given permission to join SACS. Bob Petrie resigned to accept employment at the Tire and
Rubber Plant in Mayfield. Mrs. Elizabeth Biggs Crider was named as Head Teacher in Mr. Petrie’s place.
Augusta Ervin was employed as janitoress of the Bardwell Colored School.
