Comprehensive School Improvement Plan
Carlisle County Middle School
Introduction
The process of Improvement Planning in Kentucky is used as the means of determining how schools and districts will plan to
ensure that students reach proficiency and beyond by 2014. The process focuses school and district improvement efforts on
student needs by bringing together all stakeholders to plan for improvement, by focusing planning efforts on priority needs and
closing achievement gaps between subgroups of students, by building upon school and district capacity for high quality
planning, and by making connections between the funds that flow into the district and the priority needs in schools.
Your school's plans for improvement must be based on careful and honest analysis of data, address all content areas, and
clearly address gaps in student achievement.

Comprehensive School Improvement Plan
Carlisle County Middle School
Introduction
Every school has its own story to tell. The context in which teaching and learning takes place influences the processes and procedures by
which the school makes decisions around curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The context also impacts the way a school stays faithful
to its vision. Many factors contribute to the overall narrative such as an identification of stakeholders, a description of stakeholder
engagement, the trends and issues affecting the school, and the kinds of programs and services that a school implements to support student
learning.

The purpose of the Executive Summary (ES) is to provide a school with an opportunity to describe in narrative form the
strengths and challenges it encounters. By doing so, the public and members of the school community will have a more complete picture of
how the school perceives itself and the process of self-reflection for continuous improvement. This summary is structured for the school to
reflect on how it provides teaching and learning on a day to day basis.

Carlisle County Middle School
Description of the School
Describe the school's size, community/communities, location, and changes it has experienced in the last three years. Include
demographic information about the students, staff, and community at large. What unique features and challenges are associated
with the community/communities the school serves?
Carlisle County Middle School serves students 6th through 8th grades. We have a total of 171 students. 100% of the faculty is highly
qualified. Carlisle County is a rural county with four small towns within it. The racial makeup of the county was 95.3% White, 1.17% Black or
African American, and 0.58% from two or more races. 2.92% of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.
A definite impact and concern is the economy. As with most school districts in the state over the past few years we have faced cuts in various
state programs. As we review the financial situation each year, it is a struggle to balance the budget with minimal negative impact on
instruction.

School's Purpose
Provide the school's purpose statement and ancillary content such as mission, vision, values, and/or beliefs. Describe how the
school embodies its purpose through its program offerings and expectations for students.
Carlisle County Middle School vision is "CCMS... Where a safe, creative environment fosters productive, success-minded students." We
strive to create a safe environment that allows for creativity and ensures success and educational excellence for all students. Our motto is
"Creating Pride from Inside Out." This motto comes from our belief that success is a choice and pride in self, school, family, and community
yields success.
The small student/teacher ratio provides an ideal environment for both students and teachers.
Each classroom has internet access, and every student has access to computer training and usage . Individual needs of students are met
through gifted, exceptional, and alternative education programs. We continually look for new opportunities for students and teachers to
expand their knowledge and abilities.

Notable Achievements and Areas of Improvement
Describe the school's notable achievements and areas of improvement in the last three years. Additionally, describe areas for
improvement that the school is striving to achieve in the next three years.
The district was fully accredited by Advanced Ed. within in the last three years, meeting all standards put fourth by the organization. We
believe this is a great achievement and verifies the hard work our staff has been doing over the past years. We also received a stewardship
award from the state of Kentucky for energy savings during the 2010-11 school year. Over the next three years, the district plans to continue
to improve our achievement and have all three schools score at least proficient in the new Next Generation Testing program of the state. We
continue to implement and find new and exciting ways to teach the new core standards, as well as improve our focus on the arts through the
program reviews.

Data Analysis
What question(s) are you trying to answer with the data and information provided to you? What does the data/information tell you?
What does the data/information not tell you?
We are trying to determine in what areas our students need the most help and how to best serve those students. We are also trying to
determine which groups of students need the most help so that we can taylor interventions to help them grow. The data we received tells us
our strengths and weaknesses. Some of the things the data does not tell us is how our students did on individual questions and large parts
of the test.

Areas of Strengths
What were the areas of strength you noted? What actions are you implementing to sustain the areas of strength? What is there
cause to celebrate?
Our 8th grade social studies, 7th grade science scores, and reading scores were all above the state average. Overall we had 57.1% of our
students show growth. Reading growth is 64.3%; math growth is 49.7% We have one science teacher going to the meetings regarding the
new science standards, staying abreast to the upcoming changes. We also have math and ELA teachers attending meetings, learning new
strategies, and collaborating with others from our region. We are continuing with instructional practices that have proven themselves such as
Thoughtful Education strategies. We use our ESS daytime waiver to pull out students for additional help in reading and mathematics. All
strengths and gains are causes to celebrate. We believe celebrating success, breeds success.

Opportunities for Improvement
What were areas in need of improvement? What plans are you making to improve the areas of need?
Our greatest needs lie in GAP students' scores being less than our Non-GAP students' scores and the large amount of novice in reading and
math. To improve our GAP students' scores, we are utilizing strategies from our book study, Teaching with Poverty in Mind. We have also
made sure that all teachers can identify which students are GAP students so that they can better diffentiate instruction. We are also using
our ESS daytime waiver to pull students out for additional instruction in math and reading. Our MAP testing data and STAR reading test data
help us to identify and target areas of need for our students.

Conclusion
Reflect on your answers provided in the previous sections. What are your next steps in addressing areas of concern?
We regularly assess student performance and adjust teaching as needed. Teachers are continually improving teaching and learning. Our
intervention pyramid, RTI, and ESS waiver will continue to help us address our concerning areas. Teachers are providing students with
learning targets daily. Formative assessments are used daily to drive instruction.

Comprehensive School Improvement Plan
Carlisle County Middle School
Introduction
The process of Improvement Planning in Kentucky is used as the means of determining how schools and districts will plan to ensure that
students reach proficiency and beyond by 2014. The process focuses school and district improvement efforts on student needs by bringing
together all stakeholders to plan for improvement, by focusing planning efforts on priority needs and closing achievement gaps between
subgroups of students, by building upon school and district capacity for high quality planning, and by making connections between the funds
that flow into the district and the priority needs in schools.
Your school’s plans for improvement must be based on careful and honest analysis of data, address all content areas, and clearly address
gaps in student achievement.
