Room 219 Update - Week of May 16, 2016
Dear Families,
Here is what we are working on in our classroom:
Living History: Just a reminder that the final copy and original draft are due back in
school on Wednesday, May 18th. At the end of this week students will use their reports
to write a short speech for the Living History museum; we will also practice the speech in
class. The poster and costume are due in class on Wednesday, May 25th. If you
should have any questions along the way, please feel free to access the Living History
documents on our classroom website or send me an email!
Math: The Topic 11 test will take place on Tuesday, May 17th. We will then move on to
Topic 9, which is all about fluently adding and subtracting within 1,000. The first few
lessons will focus on addition and will teach students how to use the partial sums
algorithm to add.
Writing: As we continue to work through our fairy tale unit, students will begin the big
task of planning and drafting an original fairy tale! The front end of the week will be
spent gathering ideas for our original fairy tales and properly planning them before
drafting begins. Once we begin drafting, students will learn the importance of tethering
objects to characters and be reminded to include descriptive language in their writing.
Reading: This week we will begin our new reading unit on social issues. A social issue
is any problem that many people in the world may deal with (i.e. fitting in, friendship
issues, poverty, disabilities, etc.). We recently started our new read aloud called
Crenshaw by Katherine Applegate; Crenshaw is a cat that is an imaginary friend to the
main character, Jackson. Ask your child, “What social issue does Jackson and his
family face?” Our lessons this week will focus on noticing the struggles a character may
face and analyzing a character’s reaction to issues. By the end of the week students will
begin work in their new book clubs!
Reminder: Please visit Mr. Fink’s website and sign up if you are willing and able to
