DAY 2: William Clark created several maps along the expedition’s journey. Imagine
that you have been asked to create a map of a place that you have never visited before.
a. What would you need to learn about the area in order to create the map?
b. What things would you record on the map to make it easy for someone else to follow the same
route and find the same places later?
Using the clues below label
(with COLOR) and draw the map as Lewis and Clark would
have throughout their expedition west. Begin with the first star and include all of the
bold and underlined details in your map.
Missouri River – Preparation for the expedition started in fall 1803 at the mouth of the Missouri river. The
Corps of Discovery began by making their way upstream with a keelboat and two smaller pirogues. Clark spent
most of the journey charting the course while the rest of his team were keeping their eyes out for Indians in
hopes they would encounter a peaceful tribe.
Saint Louis – Located close to the mouth of the Missouri river, Saint Louis would act as the base camp for the
Lewis and Clark expedition.
Death of Sgt. Floyd – The Corps of Discovery encounters their first Indian tribe, the Missouri. The encounter
was friendly as the two groups exchanged greetings and gifts. After the meeting between present day Iowa and
Nebraska at the Platte River, Sgt. Floyd would fall ill and die as a result of appendicitis.
Fort Mandan – Hoping to cover as many miles as possible before the river froze, Lewis and Clark reached the
Mandan Tribe’s village, located near present-day central North Dakota, at first snowfall. The expedition built a
fort for protection against the bitter winter.
Three Forks – The Corps of Discovery eventually came to a fork in the river. Each branch, located in present
day western Montana, was of equal size, but the captains believed the southern branch was the Missouri and
would lead the explorers to the Rocky Mountains.
Great Falls – Advised by the Indian tribes of the Great Falls, Lewis was astonished to find there were five, not
one water falls. Connecting the northern and southern branches of the Three Forks horizontally, the Great Falls
would prove to be difficult to get around.
Shoshone Tribe – In present-day south western Montana, just after the Great Falls, the Corps of Discovery ran
into a Shoshone Indian on horseback. The explorers bargained for horses to complete their journey on.
Continental Divide – A pass through the mountain range in the West extending north and south on the present
day border of Montana and Idaho, The Continental Divide provided not game for hunting and the explorers found
themselves with little to no food left.
Fort Clatsop – Riding the quick Clearwater River current, the settlers continued their journey through
present-day Idaho and directly along what would become the border between Oregon and Washington to Fort
Clatsop on the coast of Oregon. Here, the men took in the Pacific Ocean for the first time.
