Welcome to News Journalism and The Knight Crier Mr. Kevin J. Manero manerokj@npenn.org 215-368-9800 Ext 4880 The Knight Crier www.knightcrier.org Course Overview: News Journalism is a unique course at North Penn High School in that beyond just producing assignments, what students produce in this course is directly for publication in our high school newspaper, The Knight Crier. Grades for the course are determined through the compilation of a portfolio of that work. The work completed for this course goes beyond just writing stories, as well. In order for a journalistic publication to thrive it needs production in many other areas: photography, graphics, cartoons, social media, research, finances, publicity/ marketing, and many other areas. Expectations: In order for students to be successful in this course, they must be aware of and well versed on happenings in the school, the community, the nation, and the world. In order to be continuously productive as a member of the Knight Crier staff, students must read and watch the news on a daily basis, be well informed about developments in NPHS and throughout the school district, and must have a willingness to be innovative, ambitious, organized, and confident. Remember – we cannot produce quality journalism if we do not know what it looks like, and if we do not read newspapers or watch news broadcasts, we will not know what it looks like. Content of the Course: The topics covered through production work in this course: News Stories, Feature Articles, Personality Profiles, Sports Reports, Opinion/Editorial pieces, Weekly columns, Investigative pieces
