The Executi\·e Board of the _-\ssociated
·tudents of Grays Harbor College has ably
conducted the acti\·ities of Choken·ille dur
ir:g the 1955-56 school year. This group has
promoted the interesting season of social and
athletic e\·ents.
During the year the council
sponsored the annual Homecoming celebra

dance at the Grays Harbor Country Club.
The Days of '49 celebration \ns an excellent

The school year, 1955-56, has witnessed a
successful forensic season.
The squad has
been larger than for some years and the
achievements greater.
ine people are or
have earned the right to be members of the
national honorary society, Phi Rho Pi. Grays
Harbor College has won what it has not been
able to win before---namely, first place tro
phies from the V\Testern State Tournament
at Linfield College and from the National
Phi Rho Pi contest.
A ,·ery green squad entered the first
speech meet of the year, January 6 and 7, at
It did not achieve

sensational success, yet it won two-thirds of
its debates. Barbara Wynans placed third in
oratory and second in interpretative reading.
At the College of Puget Sound Tournament,
February 9, 10, and 1 1, Elmer Keiski and
Jim Lin.de reached the semi-finals in extem
pore, Jim Linde reached the finals in men's
oratory, and Barbara Wynans captured first
place in women's oratory.
At the Linfield
tourney, March 1, 2, and 3, Keiski and Linde
won four out of six debates in the men's
di,·ision.
Pat Hornsby and Barbara Vly
nans had similar success in the women's
division. Again Jim was a finalist in men's
oratory and Barbara received the coveted
first place trophy in women's oratory.
A.t the state junior college meet held at
Grays Harbor College, April 6 and 7, the
local squad won the sweepstake trophy by a
wide margin.
In the nine types of speech
contests Grays Harbor captured or was tied
for seven first place honors.
The year ended with the national Phi Rho
Pi contest at Ogden, Utah, April 12, 13, and
14.
Jim and Elmer were semi-finalists in
three events.
And what could be grander?
Barbara was the national champion in wom
en's oratory.

:\gain we reach the time \\"hen the ac
ti,·ities and accomplishments of Grays Har
bor College are to be recorded. The actual
recording is a relati,·ely easy task but to e,·alu
ate the benefit occurring to the indi,·idual and
the communitv "·ill be a far more difficult
.
problem.
In the last analysis each student
must decide for himself the value he has re
ceiHd from those things in \Yhich he has par-
ticipated. The community will determine the
,·alue in light of our contribution to the wel
fare of the community.
It is my hope that
these e\·aluations will be of the highest order.
The ::\ autilus carries an impressive story
of your accomplishments and activities. The
staff certainly desetTes appreciation of a job
\Yell done. lYiy congratulations to them and
to the student body for a job well done.

President Edward P. Smith, Mrs. Smith,
Kay
interest in Grays Harbor College has tre
mendously increased.

I am ' ery pleased with the achievements
and progress of our former students in the
higher institutions they attend.
This indi
cates to me that our faculty is doing an out
standing piece of work with the students at
Grays Harbor College.
I offer my sincere thanks to the towns
people, the school board, the superintendent
oi schools, and the faculty, and the students
of the college for their contribution to this
successful school year.
The 195 5-5 6 school year at Grays Harbor
College has been an e,·entful year.
In De
cember, the State Board of Education ap
proHd the allocation of state funds for the
construction of a new college plant for Grays
Harbor College.
The first units to be con
structed will include an administrati,-e unit,
a student lounge unit, a science unit, a class
room unit, and the facilities for a physical
education program.
There are other marks of progress such as,
a fine academic job by the faculty, an excel
lent piece of work by the student body offi
cers, a successful school annual and paper, a
considerable increase in enrollment, and an
excellent year in athletics, forensics, and
dramatics. Because of these accomplishments,
