Target Audience
This conference is planned for an interdisciplinary audience of healthcare
professionals.
Program Overview and Objectives
The 2015 West Virginia Geriatrics Society Scientific Assembly, “A Tragic
Story of Elder Abuse and Addiction: the Case of Lila Perkins” is designed
for healthcare providers and others interested in learning about medical
and behavioral health care provided to older adults with complex medical
conditions. Sessions will address a wide array of the most current clinical
treatment, program and policy issues facing providers, patients, families
and caregivers. Attendees will receive meaningful information and tools to
incorporate into their own work in caring for older adults suffering from
abuse and neglect. After attending the Assembly attendees will be able to:







Demonstrate new techniques to ask patients and caregivers about abuse
or neglect.
Demonstrate knowledge of when and where to report suspected adult
abuse, neglect, and/or financial exploitation.
Recognize risks versus benefits of medications to manage the behavioral
and psychological symptoms of dementia.
Utilize non-pharmacologic approaches to address behavior problems in
dementia.
Recognize the legal presumption of capacity to make one's own decisions.
Demonstrate how to approach and work with patients who have been
victims of elder abuse.
Recognize the unique clinical presentation of substance abuse related
problems in older adults.
Poster Competition
As part of the Scientific Assembly, WVGS is sponsoring its annual trainee poster
competition. The winning poster presenter will receive an award stipend of up to
$1,200.00 to attend the 2016 American Geriatrics Society (AGS) Meeting in Long
Beach, CA May 19-21. If unable to submit the winning poster to AGS, the winner
will receive $100.00. If the poster submission to AGS is completed and not accepted, the winner will receive $500.00.
