Mr. Pettit APUSH CANDIDATE Theodore Roosevelt, Progressive Party William Howard Taft, Republican Party Woodrow Wilson, Democratic Party Eugene V. Debs, Socialist Party WOMEN’S SUFFRAGE BEFORE 1920… THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION OF 1912 SUMMARY OF CAMPAIGN PLATFORM “New Nationalism”: supported women’s suffrage, income tax, lower tariffs, quality labor laws, social insurance, and currency reform. Roosevelt’s 1912 campaign was bolder and more liberal than his presidency. Supported high tariffs, the gold standard, quality labor laws, and conservation. Did not support women’s suffrage, initiative and referendum, and “bad” trusts. Taft was Progressive in mind but not in spirit. Became the poster boy for the conservative wing of the Republican party. “New Freedom”: wanted to eliminate all trusts, reduced tariff, direct election of senators, 1 term presidents, and quality labor laws. Wilson lacked the charisma and popularity of William J. Bryan. He was a major beneficiary of the divide created in the Republican party by Roosevelt and Taft. Supported all pro-‐labor policy, women’s suffrage, government ownership of railroads and utilities, and the elimination of tariffs. 1912 marked the high point of Socialist influence in the U.S.A. In 1912, Debs receives almost 1 million popular votes.
