What is violence?
• The use of physical force to injure, damage, or destroy
oneself, others or property.
• Assailant =
• attacker
• Perpetrator =
• commits a crime
• Victim =
• person injured, killed, or made to suffer
What is interpersonal violence?
• Violence that occurs between two or more people
Examples of Interpersonal Violence
• Bullying
• Homicide
• Assault
• Fighting
• Robbery
• Stealing
What is a crime?
• An action that
violates the law
Crimes of Violence Include:
• Aggravated assault =
• Physical attack or threat of attack
• Homicide = Killing of one person by another
• Murder is intentional killing by another
• Manslaughter is accidental killing by another
• ALCOHOL - DRUG MOST USED IN HOMICIDES
Crimes of Violence:
• Sexual Assault =
• A physical attack or threat of attack using
sexual comments or forcing of sexual acts
• Arson =
• Intentional or unlawful setting on fire of
property
Crimes of Violence:
• Burglary =
• Breaking/entering of property with intent to commit
a crime (felony)
• Larceny =
• The unlawful taking of personal property (to steal)
• Robbery =
• An aggravated form of theft – involving violence or
threat of violence
Acquaintance Rape / Date Rape
• Rape by someone who is known casually by the
victim or someone thought to be a friend

Facts about Rape
• Can it happen to men?
• About 3% of American men (2.78 million) have experienced a
rape at some point in their lifetime
• 71% of male victims were first raped before their 18th birthday;
16.6% were 18-24 years old, and 12.3% were 25 or older
• 22% of male inmates have been raped at least once during
their incarceration; roughly 420,000 prisoners each year
• Males are the least likely to report a sexual assault, though it is
estimated that they make up 10% of all victims

If you are raped…
• Call the police – remember identity
• Don’t shower or bathe
• Go to the hospital E.R. (medical attention
evidence – ‘Rape Kit’)
• Don’t throw away clothing
