wouldserveasthepilotschoolfollowedbyOakPark(50%F/R)andthenYork

partnersparticipation.Theinitial$45,000isforaPlanningGrantcanbefollowed
upin2016withanImplementationGrantfor$100,000whichcouldexpandthe
programtoadditionalschoolswiththehopesofrollingouttheFarmtoSchool
initiativetoall18NorthPennSchools.
GoalsorAnticipatedOutcomes:BenefitonTargetPopulation?
TheFarmtoSchoolprogramwouldincludeamovetowardsamoreholistic
approachinproviding,educatingandreinforcingthenutritionalvalueoffreshfoods
notonlytoNPSDstudentsbuttotheexpandingneedinourlocalcommunity.Fresh
foodswouldbeavailabletoourstudentsduringtheschooldaybutwouldalsobe
availabletoourdistrictfamiliesviaschool/communitygardens/producestandsand
partnerchannels.Asecondarygoalofthisinitiativewouldbetoemphasizenotonly
thenutritionalbenefitbutalsotheimpactthatpurchasingandconsuminglocally
sourced,freshfoodhasontheenvironment,localeconomyandeventhechoices
thatourstudentsmakeinchoosingacareerorcourseofstudyincollege.Withthe
ever‐changingFederalGuidelinesforSchoolNutritionandtheemphasisonHealth
andWellnessProgramsforPublicSchools,havingstudents/familiesinvolvedinthe
processmayalsoincreasewaningparticipationinschoolmealpurchases.

cookingclasses/labs)isonemoreopportunitytostresshealthychoicesduringthe
schoolday.Researchisshowingthatwhenchildrenhaveincreasedaccesstofresh
fruitsandvegetablethattheywilleatmoreservingsofthesefoods,willmakebetter
nutritionalchoicesoutsideofschoolwhichimprovesoverallhealthandinturn
readinesstolearn.
